I have been having trouble posting lately; I feel like I can't finish anything, or like I can't manage to write coherent sentences. So this is me saying fuck it, and possibly by the end of the post I'll be down to bullet points, but at least I'll be posting something.

So! The [community profile] kink_bingo arbitrary mod prizes are a sort of recs list, but they could never include include all the awesome fanworks that I wanted to give prizes to. So here are some other [community profile] kink_bingo fanworks that I enjoyed, in a wide range of fandoms. (A sad percentage of Mission Read/Listen To/Look At All the Things is spent crossreferencing headers with wikipedia before reading/looking at/listening to, actually. Now I have learned about The Losers! Maybe someday I will even watch it. It could happen.)

[personal profile] oper_1895's bingo. (White Collar, Peter/Neal and Peter/Neal/Elizabeth, all set in the same universe in which Neal is asexual.) What I like )

[personal profile] tristesses's bingo (Start Trek AOS Gaila/Uhura, Harry Potter Cho/Padma, Temeraire Laurence/Tharkay) What I like )

[personal profile] cypher's bingos; she wrote 15 stories this round, so if you're looking for a place to start how about Instinct (Eternal Poison, Rondemion/Logue) or Extra Strength (Last Remnant, Rush/David) or Whole New World (.hack//GU, Kuhn/Silabus). What I like )

[personal profile] busaikko's whole bingo (SGA, John/Rodney, John/Ronon; in the John/Rodney stories John is asexual, in the John/Ronon story Ronon is a trans man) What I like )

[personal profile] gloss's We all got in tune (Middleman, Wendy/Lacey/Noser) and Motherfuckers, quick to kiss (DCU, Dick Grayson/Jason Todd, Nightwing/Robin/Superman) What I like )

[livejournal.com profile] blackfic's This is Our Love Story (White Collar, Peter/Elizabeth) What I like )

[personal profile] pocketmouse's Quantum Equilibrium and Little Red Book (Doctor Who, Amy/Rory + Eleven) What I like )

[livejournal.com profile] the_deep_magic's multi-fandom writing on the body recs list (several fandoms) What I like )

[personal profile] liodain's bingos (Watchmen, Dan/Rorschach fic and art) What I like )

[livejournal.com profile] igbc's Pierced Through the Heart (Starsky and Hutch, Starsky/Hutch) What I like )

Also if you're looking for even more fanworks, you could check out my kink bingo tag on delicious or thingswithwing's kink bingo tag. (We each only looked at half the things, actually, and then made short lists for each other, so there's a lot of non-overlapping stuff there.)

... in other news, guys, I am down to like eight open fic tabs, all of which are giant epic stories of giantness. Wow. Also I guess I might have to read some of those giant epic stories of giantness or something. Maybe I'll finally read The Hard Prayer! (Leftmost fic tab, open at least eight months. Someday I will read it.)

Listen you guys I don't know if I've mentioned this six or twelve times before but I love it here at dreamwidth! I am so glad I moved and found this great space and subscribed to all sorts of great new people.

I am so thrilled we moved [community profile] kink_bingo here last year -- like, I just last week had an Official Conversation with [staff profile] denise where I was like, hey, our new round won't be opening for six more weeks, but I just wanted to see if we could get more invite codes in case people from lj want to play! And she was like, no problem, here you go, let us know if you need any more, we value your community. And they'll mention kinky and sex-positive groups in [site community profile] dw_news posts, and they'll stand up for our legal rights to talk about the things we talk about! I just! Guys! I feel like I have found a safe space.

Anyway, I got started thinking about that because [personal profile] telesilla asked me "So I, of course, LOVE kink_bingo and I'm just wondering why you & TWW started it up and if you had any idea that it would get to be a huge as it is now."

I can't remember how we decided to start it up, or where we got the idea, so I asked Twings if she remembered, and she doesn't either. But knowing how conversations with Twings go, I imagine that it was probably something along the lines of:
"I wish there were more kink fic!"
"Yeah! Also I am sad that some kinks are often marked as icky -- what is up with that, fandom!"
"Yeah! We should have a challenge. To have more kink fic! For all kinds of kink!"
for some reason we think of bingo here for reasons that neither of us can recall, seriously, bingo, who knows, but I do recall googling to look for bingo terminology for kinds of bingos
"Okay, let's make a list of kinks! I'll write them down as we go."
"Okay! Let's see: bondage and humiliation and sensory deprivation and..."
I also recall getting to about eighty kinks and then running out of brainstorming power and ending up with three separate sensory deprivation kinks, IDEK.
Twings: I will ask my journal if anyone would be interested in playing! If there are twenty people, we'll make a community!
eruthros: Oh cool! I will make some cards in photoshop!
finis

So, we had no idea it was going to be huge -- in fact, when I showed Twings how I was making the cards I remember that she asked me if I would be okay with making as many as sixty of them in a month, in case people wanted second or third cards. *facepalm* The first year I was making all the cards by hand in photoshop (reading off of a randomizer) until I left the country and then Twings made the rest of them, and last year we both made some in advance -- "only sixty people said they were interested in playing again on dreamwidth, and we're moving to dreamwidth which is new and smaller, let's make 200 cards in advance so we have backups!" we said -- and then we both made more and then I switched to doing them in imagemagick and typing all the kink names. I think we gave out something like 700 last year.

I am continually surprised by the number of people who are interested, because in the first round I thought maybe twenty people would play! And that's also why the rules have gotten clearer and more detailed as we've gone on -- the first time we did it, we were like "ho hum, twenty people, all people we know" so we didn't even alphabetize the kink list. It's even kinda funnily at the worst time of year for both of us -- I'm usually out of the country with almost no internet in the summer, and Twings is often travelling -- but we accidentally started in late May and we did it twice, so!

And it was also weird for me because I didn't have a fannish-only lj -- my lj was more fannish before my sister gave my whole family the url, and then I started having to flock/filter fannish stuff a lot. So I felt like I couldn't talk about kink bingo on lj, but I wanted to talk about it all the time. Especially since one of the things running the community has done is transform kinks I have that I used to be vaguely and uneasily ashamed of1 into things that I do want to talk about and feel comfortable talking about. I knew intellectually that putting the kinks all together on cards would be YKINMYBYKIOK and put kinks on equal footing, but I didn't really think it would make me feel this much more comfortable about talking about kink, this much less squicked by the kinks I don't share -- like, I'm much more able to take kinks and say, this isn't my kink right now, but what if I put it in a different context, what if I do it as powerplay, what if ... And even better, now I feel like I have a space here to talk about that sort of thing!2 Because I have moved to dreamwidth! And y'all are here! And this post comes full circle.

Also: eeeeee one month til the next round opens aaaaah I have so much to do before then!

1In a not hot way.

2Though mostly I'm not right now because I'm dealing with the kink-pseudo-wiki instead, oh my god, why is it so huge, it needs to stop. Also seriously if anyone can think of a clip for orgasm denial or object penetration or piercings/needleplay -- there must be a clip for needleplay that I've just blanked on, right -- that would be awesome.
eruthros: Farscape: John and Harvey in bunny suits (FS - John and Harvey in bunny suits)
So I was thinking about the [community profile] kink_bingo mini-challenge for this month as I was editing the kink wiki and putting in examples. And then I thought, wow, actually, I can think of a whole bunch of characters who dressed up in fursuits orfeather-suits! I should make an iconset of them to demonstrate how prevalent it is! So then I did.

There are 32 35 icons (thanks [personal profile] sabinetzin!) of people in fur/feathersuits under the cut: Mythbusters, Life on Mars, Boston Legal, Buffy, Middleman, Gravitation, and Farscape.

Sample:
001

Aaaaand then I thought, while I'm uploading icons, I'll put up some Misc Iconage that I've done recently. This set includes Mytbusters kink icons, Doctor Who, Star Trek TOS, Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, Rachel Maddow, Yellow Submarine, Hustle, White Coollar, Lord of the Rings (!), X-Files, Nichelle Nichols and Zoe Saldana, some stock photos of photography and tomatoes, and an educational comic from the 1950s.

I don't even know what all of these were for! )

1. Oh my god, they got Jewel Staite too?

For those keeping track, they also snagged Torri Higginson. And David Hewlett. Again.

2. Does anybody know why Icerocket doesn't index dreamwidth? And whether there's any way to get them to? I like to use icerocket as a casual search tool, but I want it to find DW posts too!

3. [personal profile] thingswithwings and I started to watch Fringe. We quite liked the pilot, with a few reservations, but then the second episode was all guess-what-the-camera-finds-women-being-killed-erotic. And I just can't take that anymore, no matter how interesting the characters or plots or whatever. So, friends who watch Fringe, does the show change? Was that a moment of complete screw-up that they backed off from? Or is it a show that I can't watch?

4. I find this Gloria Brame post about bondage as performance art really intriguing! It's just a little snippet, though.

5. Don't you hate it when you see an image on someone's blog without citation, and then you've got no idea when or where it's from? Well, I found one of those images, and I'd love to see the context of it.

So! Long shot and all, but can anybody tell me where this is from, or maybe a better way to google for it, or a reference book that might help me out? NSFW image under the cut )

6. Today I am using my Mythbusters icon because Mythbusters is back! Hurrah hurrah hurrah! [personal profile] thingswithwings and I ran out of Mythbusters a month ago, and since then we've only been able to rewatch things. But now! New Mythbusters! It is like an early birthday present for ME.

1. So, like nine months ago I read a blog post about kink by a person with disabilities that I completely failed to bookmark. It talked about the ways in which some folks with disabilities experience "different" and "non-normative" and thus already potentially kinky sensation, or are already in interesting and complicated relationships with pain or bondage, or any of a bunch of other stuff that means that the relationship between disability and kink isn't just that someone has to "deal with" the limitations of a disabled body, but that disability can be part of what makes some folks interested in e.g. sensation play. (Like, I certainly think about bondage differently now that I wear braces 24/7.) Did anybody else bookmark this post, or know of a good post like it?

I've seen a bunch of things that go the other way -- that talk about safety, and limitations of mobility, and how to avoid doing harm -- but not as many that talk about, like, why someone with chronic pain might find tattoos interesting.

Actually, fic that does that sort of thing would be interesting, too.

2. Does anyone have any suggestions of reading about the kink practices in specific non-Western spaces? I can't figure out how to google or library-search and get good results.

What this comes out of: if you asked me about whipping and flogging in Western kink practice, I could tell you a bunch of contexts in which it happened historically, and talk about how that relates to various flogging scenes (military discipline, religious flagellation, judicial punishment). And I could google and read all about what-whipping-means-to-me as written by various folks in the American/British/Canadian kink communites. But I don't know anything about the historical and contextual and emotional symbols of kink practice in Japan (except for that thing I read once about the history of military restraint and bondage).

3. I can't find a translation of the text on Hokusai's Dream of the Fisherman's Wife. I've found places that reference a book with a translation, but nothing on the internets.

4. So, okay, css baffles me. I am using a version of the Sunday Morning layout over at [community profile] kink_bingo, which I quite like, except for one problem: no underlined links. And no underlined links is an accessibility issue, especially since the link text color is quite similar to the main text color. And I know how to make the css underline all links, but that includes, like, the links in usernames and dates, which I find weird-looking in the style; I'll live with it if there's no way to change it, but if there's a way to specifically mark usernames as text-decoration: none and calendar dates as not links at all, that would be awesome.

5. Your favorite (intentionally or unintentionally) kinky moments in mainstream tv and film! Go!

Reading yuletide letters is generally a lot of fun; I get a sort of squishy fannish goodwill off most of them. But, well, here is the other part of reading lots of yuletide letters. I've pulled out some quotes about kink and loosely organized them into three general boundary-policiing themes behind the cuts, but they will otherwise be reproduced largely without comment:

Type 1: Normal and Not-Normal )

Type 2: What Does That Even Mean? )

Type 3: No Scat, Please )
eruthros: llamas! (llamas)
So, a long time ago, I read zorrorojo's Just a Guy, a Highlander/Star Trek: Voyager crossover. Recently, [personal profile] thingswithwings and I were discussing the intriguing kinkiness of deaged fic -- where, even if the characters don't have sex when one of them is a kid, there's all of this interesting narrative focus on youth, on innocence, on John Sheppard needing to be trained to recognize love through being hugged a lot, on Blair Sandburg's tiny hands, on Rodney McKay's big eyes and trembling lips. Narrative kinks are intriguing! And I remembered this story, and went and tracked it down, and shared the kinky highlights with [personal profile] thingswithwings, and now I want to share it with you.

Tom Paris and Methos are deaged by an alien device... )

So, anyway, this story was totally one of my guilty pleasures in like 2001, and I really enjoyed it in a lot of ways even though the writing style is not my bag. And I think, now, that one of those ways was the narrative kink, the ageplay, the virginity stuff, that is never played out -- Chakotay and MacLeod never have sex with deaged Tom and Methos, though Tom and Methos have sex with each other in a sort of puppy pile way. But it's all there anyway, right, all the stuff about tiny hands and keeping Methos in line and breaking the rules and whatever, Methos's attempts to game MacLeod by acting out, it's a complete roleplay scenario. It's just that the sex never happens.

Anyway, this is a thing I've been thinking about lately, about fic with this sort of narrative kinkiness, where the author/reader get off but the characters don't: Simpson flogs Hornblower, who doesn't enjoy it, but we do; Blair is kidnapped and brainwashed; John Sheppard is forced to worship an alien god; Obi-Wan has to get nipple rings to go undercover; Mulder is branded by Cancer Man. Examples and other thoughts welcome, as always.

I noticed some overlap between [community profile] kink_bingo categories and [livejournal.com profile] cliche_bingo categories, and I thought it might be interesting to explore that overlap. So, I present here a list of [community profile] kink_bingo categories that are also categories in [livejournal.com profile] cliche_bingo.

I may have missed some overlap in glancing over the list; if so, I'd be interested to know what they are.

You will find the table below this cut )

[livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings and I are ramping up to round two of kink bingo, which means a) finishing making prizes b) making icons and c) researching kinks. Which means a lot of googling. I've googled for images, I've googled for resources, I've googled for things I didn't even know existed three weeks ago.

So, there I was at the blog for Male Submission Art, and I followed the source link under one of the nicer pictures, just in case the linked blog was awesome. And there were no pictures, and no well-laid-out informational posts, but -- hey, this chick compiles sex toy giveaways! And look, there are only twenty people who put their names in the hat -- might as well comment with my name, those are pretty good odds, right? And so I enter a couple of them and then promptly forget about it, since none of them had useful resources or images. But I just got an email today from one of them, and I won!

So, yes, as a direct result of doing kink bingo, I will shortly be receiving an Onye Vibrator in a satin-lined case.

PS: there's another giveaway over here for the Lelo toy of your choice (!!!) that I haven't entered yet, because you have to submit a story or image or something and that seems like work. (But fandom should totally be on that, guys, y'all are awesome at this sort of thing.) Anyway, the closing date is April 10th.
eruthros: Delenn from Babylon 5 with a startled expression and the text "omg!" (BtVS cheeseman nonsense)
This appears in a critique of a BBC period film set in England circa 1900. Ready? Okay!
"I thought it was completely and utterly absurd. It was so out of its time. For example, all the knowledge about sadists -- sexual sadism and, and, psychopathy. Bearing in mind, Freud had only written The Interpretation of Dreams, I think it was published in 1899."
*laughs hysterically* Oh, man, talk about a non sequitor! APPARENTLY, sadism didn't exist until Freud invented psychoanalysis -- you know, it wasn't named, in, like, 1820 after some guy. No! It took Freud to invent the term and tell people all about it!

And, oh man, as if Psychopathia Sexualis hadn't nicely laid all of that out fifteen years prior? And as if folks hadn't bought it to read it as porn?

I love the way people think about Victorian England sometimes, guys.
