eruthros: llamas! (llamas)
For my birthday this past weekend, I got the flu. Now I am achey and tired and cranky and fever-and-chills-y and hard-to-focus-y and I can't read fic and I screwed up the decreases in my knitting like twelve times yesterday because I couldn't count.

So I thought it was time to post a guessing-fannish-stuff meme!

Some months ago, [personal profile] aria posted a bunch of post secret-style secrets from the POV of various characters, and asked people to guess who wrote which secret. At the time I thought it was a great idea, and wanted to turn it into a meme (again), but then it took me a long time to make any secrets, and also to come up with secrets, and anyway I'm bad at getting around to posting things, so I just stuck them over in posts-to-maybe-make-someday. But today is clearly a good day for it!

Behind the cut: forty-some secrets by characters from twenty-some fandoms; includes text descriptions )

One NSFW secret is here, under a separate cut )

I'd love to play in your versions, too! )

ETA: There are two secrets left unguessed (counting the ones where someone made an awesome guess, but nobody guessed what I'd originally intended): #7 and 41. So I thought I'd narrow down the fandoms somewhat; the remaining ones come from: Stargate SG-1 and Nintendo video games.

Today is Post All The Things I Have Been Composing In Tabs day!

I need new knitting TV. The thing is, a lot of tv I'm watching or re-watching with people, so I can't put on five episodes in a row while I finish up that scarf. (At the moment, this rules out X-Files, Farscape, Xena, and probably Fringe.) I like my knitting TV to be have interesting characters and plots but also be pleasantly trope-y, so that I can just glance up every few seconds to go "right, they're doing the interrogation scene, check." If it's amazing and groundbreaking and I have to have all my attention focused on it, it's not good for knitting.

For a while I was watching Criminal Minds, first because I loved Morgan and Garcia, and later because I loved Morgan and Garcia and was staring in a sort of train-wreck kind of fascination at the sudden fail of the show, but I think that I have now hit the limit of my train-wreck fascination, so now I need something new. Other good knitting TV has included Numb3rs, the Dead Zone, Leverage, SG1, Mythbusters, the Sarah Jane Adventures, V, Starsky and Hutch, various rewatches of things, and other things I've forgotten now. Things that are generally not good tv for me include most sitcoms (I sitcom-embarrassment-squick easily), crime dramas that are really into victim-cam or into only-weirdos-commit-crimes, and fantasy that does our-(heterosexual)-relationship-is-destined.

in which I live-IM and clip to document the end of my train-wreck fascination with Criminal Minds and distract from the main point of this post but seriously you guys this actually happened on the show I cannot even deal )

I was thinking about hilarious plotting just now, and it occurred to me that I'd probably never shared my favorite seven minutes of Criminal Minds of pretty much all time. It is a) ridiculous plotting and b) Morgan looks super hot but c) it is a cop show and there is gun violence, a terrorism plot, and an explosion. So what has just happened here is that the team's in New York, a small car bomb just went off, and the team is trying to figure out where the second explosion is going to be:Criminal Minds clip of lolarity )

But really it just makes Morgan that much more awesome. Morgan/Garcia: dirty talk OTP, and like seventy percent of the crime-solving on the show.

I think my second favorite lolzy plotting moment is in the Sentinel episode "Cypher." And, I mean, picking a Sentinel episode is kind of a cheat, given that there's also an episode in which Jim Ellison has to borrow a racehorse to chase a man through an amusement park, an episode in which Jim Ellison is thrown out of a speeding train and ends up hanging under it for half an hour, and an episode in which Jim Ellison goes temporarily blind, learns to use echolocation, and then drives a car in a complicated chase scene. But this is just such a small ridiculous moment that underscores all the ridiculousness that was The Sentinel, because in "Cypher," inside of two minutes of fight scene, Jim Ellison drops two separate guns -- one of them, iirc, twice. That's right, his sentinel senses allow him to fire a shot into the barrel of somebody else's gun, but any time someone taps his arm he drops his gun. And he also falls down broken elevator shafts or whatever twice in the same two minutes. Once the elevator shaftish thing is blocked by a glass window so it can shatter satisfyingly. The writers of that show only had two tricks for ramping up the tension during a fight scene: Jim drops his gun, and Jim falls down. Okay, three: Blair is in trouble! Bless.

Do y'all have favorite plot moments like that?

1. misdirected email:
Good Afternoon [name], Thank you for registering for Friday’s Anonymous Sexual Addictions workshop.
Hey, facilitator dude, how about checking the email addresses before you send them? OR here's a thought: don't put anyone's name in your email! Then if it gets misdirected, nobody will know who was supposed to get it! And nobody will have been inadvertently outed! Just a thought.

Anyway, I can't decide if that was the worst (in the sense of most embarrassing or potentially harmful) misdirected email I've ever received, so I have made a poll:

Open to: Registered Users, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 30

Worst misdirected email story:

The thirty emails in a day from Wells Fargo about someone's account overdrafting

The email from a pastor with a ton of details of a couple's marriage counseling

The email from google informing me that my email address had just been set as the account-recovery address for someone's professional hotel reservations account

The, like, 200 messages from eHarmony users about someone's online dating profile

The abovementioned email about the anonymous sexual addiction workshop

Listen, my story is much worse than that! Let me tell you all about it in the comments.

2. joy: someone linked to this photo on tumblr, and it made me go all happy and awww. Because it is adorable!

Criminal Minds' Shemar Moore and Matthew Gray Gubler grinning with their arms around each other. Also, Shemar Moore is wearing a really kick-ass hat.

That's Criminal Minds' Matthew Gray Gubler (Spencer Reid) on the left, and Shemar Moore (Derek Morgan) on the right. I have no idea where or when it was taken -- because, you know, tumblr -- so I sadly can't go and look for other pictures that might also include Kirsten Vangsness grinning. Criminal Minds turned into a different (worse) show in its last few seasons, but listen, Morgan still has my HEART. Okay, he and Garcia are sharing it. Anyway: just look at those grins, awwwwww.

3. photo-spread misogyny: Apparently Vogue did a fashion editorial spread on a Spider-Man theme. It is like, here are the films (and a lot of the comics) in a nutshell: Mary Jane is menaced by various villains with phallic bits to their costumes while wearing designer dresses and looking beautiful and unconscious/threatened/withdrawn. It's all right, guys, Peter Parker will save her!

4. tv: Lately I have been watching The Sarah Jane Adventures? I started at the beginning after I watched the one with casting spoilers! ), which was awesome and made me go \o/. And mostly it is a great mood-improver and full of happiness. They save the world with hugs and talking about their feelings and hand-holding! Rani and Maria and Luke and Clyde are adorable! Sarah Jane is awesome and has issues and backstory! They are a FAMILY. That saves the world and talks about aliens and emotions and love. If only most of the villains weren't evil lady-types, and if only the good guys didn't do that awful Smallville-esque targeted amnesia shit, I would have basically my ideal show.

5. Avatar: The Last Airbender: You might've seen this already, but just in case, did you guys see [personal profile] such_heights's post in [community profile] white_lotus about an Avatar: The Last Airbender gift exchange? [personal profile] inkstone suggested the exchange + the lunar new year posting dates, and a bunch of people said they were interested, so it looks like it will happen! Fanfic, fanart, fanvids, etc all accepted. So if you have preferences for style/rules/etc, plz comment at that post; we're going to try to get rules up in a couple of days so that we can do signups before the end of November. \o/ ATLA exchange!

1. Watched Mythbusters! New episodes just started airing last night. All I have to say about it is spoiler cut )

2. Made cheesecake brownies! Just sort of spontaneously. [personal profile] happydork linked to this recipe for cheesecake brownies, and I looked at it and went, wait, I can do all of those steps! So I went out and bought cream cheese and then made a recipe.

3. Installed some non-VLC media players, because VLC started being so slow and buggy and building-font-library-y. I've tried KMPlayer and SMPlayer; of the two, I like the KMPlayer better, although I hate its icons. I'm still shopping around, though, if you have other suggestions.

4. Rewashed all of my fall and winter clothes. No, really, all of them. allergies are no fun )

5. Gotten excited about knitting again! I used to mostly knit projects on small needles -- fingering or lace weight socks and lace scarves and things -- and now holding those needles hurts too much and it made me cranky that I had all this stash yarn for socks that I wouldn't be using (or, at least, not for socks). So I haven't knit in a year or so, but when [personal profile] anatsuno was here we were talking about knitting, and I remembered I had a worsted-weight sweater to knit, so now I'm in the middle of that. (I <3 alpaca.) And I'm doing a worsted lace scarf, too. And I realized I had some super bulky local yarn that I bought when one of the sheeps-milk people decided to stop making yarn and sold it all off super cheap, and my old slippers are falling apart, so perhaps I will felt up some slippers. I'm all: knitting in front of the tv! This is a thing I used to do! Right! Only now I have to get new needles for basically every project, because I have a ton of 0-3s, but like one pair of size 9 needles.

6. Speaking of TV, I also watched the first few Criminal Minds episodes from this season. spoiler cut )
