service rec: NewsBlur

I kept meaning to make this post when I see people talk about RSS reader alternatives, because NewsBlur changed my blog reading for the better and I love it! And I think maybe some of y'all would love it too. The basic reason: tag screening and story training means I can follow just some tags and screen out other tags from any RSS feed (including tumblr or AO3 feeds).

intransitive podficed my fic!

[personal profile] intransitive PM'ed me the other day to let me know that they podficced my Toph/Katara poly fic Spa Day! Their reading is amazing; I just found time to listen to it the other day and enjoyed the heck out of it. I wish my line delivery were half that good when I podfic things!

[personal profile] intransitive's Spa Day podfic post to the AO3 or to amplificathon.

(Still very busy, still haven't seen the latest fannish things, still have half-finished posts in a bunch of documents, still <3 you all. Also, still love blanket permission, that shit is awesome.)

palate-cleansing usb stick

I made a usb stick full of palate-cleansing media to keep around for watching after I watch Doctor Who (because I can't seem to stop watching it, but it makes me sad and angry). So I pulled things based on all your recs and on things that were findable in time - it's all things that are funny or beautiful or delightful or well-written or full of amazing complex women and people of color who talk to each other or all of the above, so it has things for most kinds of bummed out tv-watching. It's not perfect media or anything, but it's all (theoretically) restorative in all different ways. And because some of y'all might also have this problem with some shows or movies sometimes, I thought I'd report what's on it:

  • Ranma 1/2 (for the nostalgic-for-the-nineties value, and for the laughter)

  • Princess Tutu (the first couple eps - I've never seen it but lots of people have recced it)

  • Princess Mononoke (pretty!)

  • The Middleman (art crawl! \o/)

  • Bringing Up Baby (because Katherine Hepburn is amazing, and Cary Grant makes a great straight man, and there's a leopard)

  • My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (we could learn an important lesson about friendship and working together and trusting each other. And we could sing along with Winter Wake-Up, too, as necessary.)

And stuff I'll be adding:

  • Dark Angel (the first couple episodes - I've actually only seen a couple of eps of it out of order back when it was airing)

  • Xena (misc stuff like "A Day in the Life" and the time loop one)

  • Sailor Moon (I haven't seen it since I saw it on tv in the nineties, dubbed and scrubbed of "offensive" content)

  • Toshokan Sensō (never seen it, it comes recced and, come on, alternate history library wars!)

  • Gokusen (not scifi-y, but on the other hand, inspirational teaching!)

I would've put Avatar: The Last Airbender on there, but seriously, I have used it for this purpose so many times in the last year that I need a break. Or Legend of Korra. Or both. And eventually I will find a way to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena with subtitles. Yeesh, the internet.

As I watch stuff off the stick I'll probably replace it with later eps from the same serieses, depending on what I find interesting. More recs always welcome! The bigger the bummed-out-by-tv collection, the better, because this media selection still doesn't seem big enough to cover all the contingencies. (What if I want angry activist palate-cleansing?)

top one hundred speculative fiction works: nominations

So I was being grumpy about that NPR list of the top 100 science fiction and fantasy novels and how boring it was, and then I started wondering what that kind of list would look like if a bunch of fannish people made it instead and if the definition of scifi and fantasy were looser.

And then I decided to do it, more or less on the same model as the NPR list, because why not? At the very least it would mean getting a bunch of interesting recs.

So the general model is:
1) Nomination period: anyone can nominate ten speculative fiction works (in any media).
2) Long list: made up of all the nominations where anyone can vote for their favorites. (Probably divided by media and/or language because the poll might be too big otherwise.) NPR used some NPR folks or an algorithm or something and then a panel of "experts" at this point to narrow things down, but nobody's an expert on all speculative fiction. (And also either the unknown NPR folks or the experts did this.)
3) Short list: a poll of the top two hundred-some things from the long list.
4) Compile the numbers from (3) to make the final list of the top 100.

And this is going to be the nomination post! For nominating things you love. They don't have to be the things that you think of as the absolute objectively best speculative fiction - nominate your favorites or the things you love most or the things you think are best or the things that influenced you the most or however else you define your top ten speculative fiction works.

What counts as speculative fiction? )

The nomination rules )

To nominate your ten things )

Example nomination )

Feel free to signal-boost! More nominations = more interesting polls.

ETA: Here's a browsable spreadsheet listing all of the nominations as of 8/19. Many, many things have been nominated!

ETA2: Oh what the hell, some people have asked for it and why not! You can have +5 additional nominations as long as they're for less-represented speculative fiction media: music (songs, albums, filk, music videos), fanworks (fanfic, fanvids, fanfilms, fanart), theater (plays, musicals), poetry, games (video, rpg, card, board), short films, art (paintings, fanart, digital art), or any medium that's not currently represented on the spreadsheet at all.

ETA3: Nominations are now closed.

some recs

1. If you like silly flash games, I recommend Elephant Quest, in which you are a small blue elephant whose hat has been stolen by a wooly mammoth. Pros: charmingly ludicrous premise; similarly great leveling (find helium balloons and tie them to yourself to jump further); flash-styles platformer in which you can't die for reals; nice artwork. Cons: sometimes you have to do a bit of level-grinding; a couple of moments in the dialogue include really wince-worthy ableism. Basically I really enjoyed it except for the OCD elephant.

2. I just found a new awesome ginger beer! We just did a Reed's versus Maine Root brand taste-off, and omg the Maine Root ginger brew is kind of amazing. It's like the full flavor profile of ginger: it starts smooth and round, it ends up sharp, the flavor lasts a long time. A++ am drinking again right now.

3. Mineral sunscreen! I sunburn really easily, but I often react badly to the chemicals in most sunscreen (they burn my face off, which sort of ... renders the sunscreen part moot) and also there's been a lot of talk in the last few years about how the chemicals are bad for you, so I have been trying to transition to mineral sunscreen for maybe two-three years now. This is a mixed bag, mostly, but putting some on just now reminded me that I'd finally found a great one at the end of last summer. Here is my roundup of mineral sunscreens )

4. Someday I am going to start doing a diverse-bodies diverse-kinks kink tumblr. I can see it coming every time I scroll through a kink tumblr and see nothing but (apparently) young skinny cis white TAB women in bondage. Many of those pictures are very nice and all, but they just build up on each other to oh my god there are other kinds of people in the world.

But that day is not today, because I've got shit to do, so here are some recs instead: Ireen's Gaze is lovely - it's one of the "I post what I like best" tumblrs, so it's sort of like "diverse bodies doing diverse kinks! cool pictures of cool people! commentary about sex and gender and race and class! Jensen Ackles!" So if you're looking for a unified thing, this is not it, but I like it anyway. Pretty Kinky Things does okay, sometimes. Orlando of 333 images does diverse kinks, but not a lot of diverse bodies; he's sometimes interesting when he talks about kink and what images mean to him, but he's also sometimes a bit *facepalm* about cultural variations in kink. Also there are some tumblrs that do sex generally and have a bit of kink in there.

And if you know good tumblrs I'm not following let me know! I'm not really interested in sex, just in kink (though the kink can have sex in it).

Vorkosigan recs, meme, other stuff

1. A rec! Vorkosigan-verse, missing scene three months, [archiveofourown.org profile] philomytha's Aral Vorkosigan's Dog. It's set during the Barrayaran-Escobaran War, when Illyan's mission is basically to follow Vorkosigan around and watch everything he does, and it's all about how he stops being a neutral observer and how watching changes him. (Note: this story involves Ges Vorrutyer, so it includes rape and torture and the same predatory-kinky-bisexual-evil-dude thing as the book does.)

This is the kind of story where the two main characters don't sleep with each other, and I almost don't need it, because that moment when Illyan holds out his hands in silent fealty - and when he thinks of himself as Aral's loyal dog - oh geez, guys, it it amazing.

Though that doesn't mean that I would turn down an Aral/Cordelia Aral/Simon story in which Cordelia gives Simon her blessing and they all love each other fiercely. You know. If anybody has one on offer. There's [personal profile] dira's amazing Aral/Cordelia and Aral/Jole series - The World That You Need - which I love a lot and think is great and does a lot of nice poly/open relationship things. But it doesn't feature Simon.

And while I'm doing Vorkosigan recs, philomytha also wrote Dazzled, a snippet in which Duv Galeni imagines swearing a fealty oath to Aral Vorkosigan and is immensely drawn to the idea. Neo-feudalism and oaths of loyalty, guys, some fandoms just bring the gen kink and the fascinations with power dynamics. Fantasy and scifi novels that play with monarchy and patriarchy and feudalism and take them seriously, that want that system back and want to be on top of that pyramid, often make me uncomfortable. But make it a story about revolution, or a story about erotics - about the way someone can subvert that power pyramid and take power back by getting off on it in interesting ways - and I am so there.

3. [personal profile] anatsuno's tab-meme. Basically the rules are: tell the internet about the tabs you have open, without editing for guilty-pleasures reasons (though obv editing for RL info is fine). My list of open tabs )

4. I have been so fucking tired today. I don't know why. I slept plenty of hours! I went to bed at a more reasonable hour than I often do! But I just barely managed to claw my way out of bed this morning, and all day I was so tired I couldn't even focus on the laptop to watch tv. I tried sugar and protein and a walk out in the cold (to the coffee shop) and a soy latte (from the coffee shop) and nothing worked. But I was determined to send this story off for beta tonight, and I did, so there, exhaustion.
eruthros: Xena and Gabrielle looking at each other in the dark (Xena - looking at each other)
2011-02-03 11:01 pm

Xena! Gabrielle! <3!

For reasons possibly related to someone on my rlist looking for recs for Xena episodes, a while ago I rewatched "The Bitter Suite" for the first time in five years.

And then I sniffled a lot.

Guys, I miss that show. I miss the strange and beautiful combination of camp and wtf and tragedy and drama. I miss the women who love each other that intensely. I miss women with emotional scars. I miss (my corner of) the fandom(s) where the most common pairings were Xena/Gabrielle and Xena/Callisto and Xena/Lao Ma. I miss the working-motherhood and the fighting and the joking and the parodies and the hugs. I miss Xena singing and dancing and leaping over people's heads, and Gabrielle hitting everyone with sticks and writing it down later. I miss their despair and their tears and their hope and their joy. I miss the anachronisms, and the giant snakes, and the people in foam monster costumes, and the centaurs filmed only from the waist up, and the styrofoam monuments they borrowed from ST:TOS, and the fight scenes that completely ignore the laws of physics. I miss Xena and Gabrielle's determination and their anger and their laughter.

I miss two ladies riding off into the sunset together after saving the day.

(Though on the other hand I do not miss the noncon-mystical-pregnancy and the sexual assault metaphors and the Orientalism and the weird Christian season and the way Gabrielle and Xena could say they loved each other but could never actually, canonically, be sleeping together.)

So then I watched two vids that made me sniffle some more, and here they are in case you, too, have been missing Xena and/or ladies riding off into the sunset lately. They're both massively, massively spoilery for the main arcs of the show. Some vid recs )

And since I'm writing this post now I might as well copy the recs over. So!

You might like Xena if you like: the early seasons of Supernatural (they have similar road-trip-jokey-buddy-cop-heros-with-camp-and-tragedy thing going on, though Xena takes it to a whole nother level), ladies who love each other, pseudo-historical settings filled with anachronisms (kiwis at the siege of Troy?), seriously epic drama, tragedy and humor in the same episodes, camp, cheap special effects, loyalty, emotional arcs (oh Gabrielle!), tragic villains, women kicking ass, women saving the day with science or diplomacy or cons as well as ass-kicking, fight scenes, fight scenes that completely ignore physics, people who seem to use their swords just to add weight to their punches, boomerangs chakrams that always come back, or shows that love their tropes. Also other things I'm sure I can't think of right now, but perhaps people will leave them in the comments.

some eps I recced the other day )

some extremely spoilery things that some people might want to know about the show before deciding whether to watch or deciding to skip some eps )

... aaaand between the time I started this post and now I might've started a rewatch and made it all the way to episode 1x20. I clearly need to post this before I'm in season four and this post is even more ridiculous. But it makes me smile and brings me joy! Mostly! Except for the parts that don't!

vids, links, tech, food, miscellany

1. More Festivids recs!

Attention Please, Paprika. PRETTY. I don't know what's going on at all, but I think that's part of the point. And the editing is really great, and uses the music really beautifully, and the whole vid has this cool hallucinatory quality.

Illumination, Joseon X-Files. Wow, this is completely gorgeous and atmospheric and ...oddly creepy, maybe? I love the way the vidder used movement of light and shadow, and the music is a great choice. I have never seen this show but clearly I must!

Space Oddity, Community. This is a really sweet Abed/Troy vid about their shared geekery, awwww. Their love of spaceships brings them closer together!

They Want More, Jurassic Park. I can't believe I forgot to rec this the other day, because it made me laugh and laugh. Dinosaur pov ftw.

Truth Is in the Dirt, V (2009). Oh, Erika Evans, ILU! This vid draws some interesting parallels between Erika and Anna, and uses the song and the atmospheric footage to great effect.

2. In knitting-related news, if you're going to drop a stitch, should you do it a) while doing some nice 2x2 ribbing, b) while setting up your short rows, or c) immediately after knitting your two stacked short row stitches? Yeah, I picked option c, who the hell even knows where these loops go. *rips back like twenty rows*

3. I was really sick of accidentally clicking on links that people had written to include hxxp (which some people do to anonymize links) so I installed a greasemonkey script to change hxxp to http. Then I realized that I was not respecting people's desire for anonymity and not incidentally was breaking the rules of some communities and forums, so I edited the script to change the hxxps to working anonym.to links instead. If you'd like to do the same thing, instructions for making an anonym.to redirect )

And now I am clicking on those links with ease. *is so lazy*

4. I am excited to see the permanent style=mine and style=site options (described in the latest news post), but reading people's comments about both options always reminds me that neither option is perfect for me. I often turn custom comment pages on not because I like the style or worked hard on it or anything, but because I want the sidebar or header (tags and links and etc) to be available on entry pages; I usually prefer to read in the site style. And especially in communities, if the entry page is in the site style, there's no obvious place to click for the rules or tags, which often leads to a lot of questions that are a pain in the ass ("where can I find ..." "but do you ..." "if I want to sign up ..."), or posts that don't follow the posting templates or rules or whatever. So I am still torn about site style versus custom comment pages.

5. Aren't these pantone-chip cookies pretty much the coolest thing ever? I love that she just mixed up colored icing and then matched it to a pantone color after it cooled.

6. And speaking of food, [personal profile] glass_icarus recently posted Potluck #1, a blog carnival dedicated to multicultural/intersectional posts about food.

7. And only loosely related to food, Happy New Year to everyone who celebrates! At the moment I am all eeee [community profile] white_lotus Lunar New Year Exchange eeee. The fanworks are SO GREAT GUYS, I am so glad to be posting them now where other people can see them. I have been so caught up in the excitement that I have even tried to make some treats, but I keep being interrupted by spreadsheets.

festivids! ee!

Omg there are so many vids!

I have watched several of them already, mostly in the genres of "scifi" "queer film" and "films with people of color." Here are some that I particularly liked:

O Death, Book of Eli. I haven't seen the movie at all -- basically all I know about it is that it's a post-apocalypse -- but wow, this vid is GORGEOUS. And it really makes clever use of the quiet movement in the song, so that it ends up using these neat restrained rhythms. Plus did I mention the part where it's gorgeous?

After All, Sarah Jane Adventures. This totally made me tear up a little. It's a Sarah Jane vid about her whole life, so there's some Old Who and some New Who and a whole bunch of SJA and it is basically everything I want in a vid about Sarah Jane. <3

Who Needs Enemies, ST: DS9. This is really interesting and pretty, and I'm not really sure I got the whole story in it, but the Bashir + Sloan + Garak, and the performance and watching-your-own-life and spy stuff, is all really deftly handled. And dense. Definitely dense. It makes me wish I remembered more about those plots.

End of the World, Life After People. It's not quite my genre, but it's sort of a (post-)apocalypse vid regardless. And it does really cool things with time-lapse and tight cutting and with collapse and destruction. I really enjoyed it. (Note: rotting food, maggots, insects, etc.)

Beat Control, Lilo and Stitch. It's like pure joy! With lots of dancing and hugs and family!

The Humbling River, Red Cliff. I really enjoyed the vid -- it's beautiful, and I like the editing a lot, and like the character-focuses, and I <3 Zhuge Liang like whoah. But I'm not a fan of the song choice, so I end up feeling a little torn about it.

Anywhere On This Road, Jericho. I have never seen the show at all, so I'm sure I'm missing a ton of layers in this vid -- I actually just clicked on it because I like the singer (Lhasa de Sela). And wow, it's a really great post-apocalypse vid, and the song gives it this feeling of inevitability and tension at the same time. Very cool.

Now I will go poke at more festivids! Or do some knitting, one of those two things.

some links

1. You guys, [livejournal.com profile] icepixie wrote The Heart's Compass, the Babylon 5 Delenn/Ivanova AU of my dreams, seriously, could I have had this show instead? It's a little awkward in places but, I mean, so was the show. And listen, it is a story where Delenn falls for Ivanova instead of Sheridan, early in the series, and it makes my heart happy.

[livejournal.com profile] icepixie also wrote a a post-Sleeping in Light Ivanova/Delenn story that I haven't read yet (Later Stars of Dawn), which added to the Ivanova/Delenn story that [personal profile] thingswithwings wrote for my birthday one year (Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano in C Major, Garibaldi/Franklin, Lennier/Vir, Ivanova/Delenn, postseries) makes three Ivanova/Delenn stories in the last few years. It is a small-fandom rare-pairing embarrassment of riches!

(Especially since there are also a few drabbles and short vignettes over at the AO3, though most of them are about unrequited love.)

2. Don't know what to be this Halloween? Check out wtf should I be for Halloween, which contains as many costume ideas as there are articles on wikipedia. And puts "sexy" in front of all of them.

Since it's completely randomized, there are some really great options. This year I plan on going as a Sexy Fort Reliance Water Aerodrome, for example. (There's also the potential for fail, because of course there are many pages on wikipedia that really shouldn't be indexed with "sexy" in front of them; I didn't encounter anything faily when I clicked through, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.)

3. I frequently encounter images on tumblr that are unattributed or dewatermarked, and sometimes that makes me really sad -- I don't know if that photographer has a ton more pretty image, or what the original context was, or anything. But if I see something really great and I really really want to know if there's more by the same photographer, I look for the picture over at TinEye, a reverse image search engine. Sometimes it even works! Anyway this is a link to TinEye, which I think I was first linked to three years ago when their image index was even smaller; now I do sometimes have some success with them.

4. The US Department of Justice recently filed a brief that said that genes shouldn't be patentable, which is ... kind of amazing.

5. Apparently TVTropes is going to have to take down, move, rename, or mark as NSFW a lot of their sex and sexuality-related content because google ads noticed that ads are running on pages with mature content. And they might have to make registration mandatory to view sex/kink/fetish tropes, and they are planning to make registration mandatory for editing pages. I don't hang out there or anything, but it still makes me sad -- many of those pages are very useful for vidding/iconing/etc. Or for [community profile] kink_bingo, where I have often used the TV Tropes pages for tentacles to find pictures or examples or video of canonical tentacles.

some more kink bingo recs

I have been having trouble posting lately; I feel like I can't finish anything, or like I can't manage to write coherent sentences. So this is me saying fuck it, and possibly by the end of the post I'll be down to bullet points, but at least I'll be posting something.

So! The [community profile] kink_bingo arbitrary mod prizes are a sort of recs list, but they could never include include all the awesome fanworks that I wanted to give prizes to. So here are some other [community profile] kink_bingo fanworks that I enjoyed, in a wide range of fandoms. (A sad percentage of Mission Read/Listen To/Look At All the Things is spent crossreferencing headers with wikipedia before reading/looking at/listening to, actually. Now I have learned about The Losers! Maybe someday I will even watch it. It could happen.)

[personal profile] oper_1895's bingo. (White Collar, Peter/Neal and Peter/Neal/Elizabeth, all set in the same universe in which Neal is asexual.) What I like )

[personal profile] tristesses's bingo (Start Trek AOS Gaila/Uhura, Harry Potter Cho/Padma, Temeraire Laurence/Tharkay) What I like )

[personal profile] cypher's bingos; she wrote 15 stories this round, so if you're looking for a place to start how about Instinct (Eternal Poison, Rondemion/Logue) or Extra Strength (Last Remnant, Rush/David) or Whole New World (.hack//GU, Kuhn/Silabus). What I like )

[personal profile] busaikko's whole bingo (SGA, John/Rodney, John/Ronon; in the John/Rodney stories John is asexual, in the John/Ronon story Ronon is a trans man) What I like )

[personal profile] gloss's We all got in tune (Middleman, Wendy/Lacey/Noser) and Motherfuckers, quick to kiss (DCU, Dick Grayson/Jason Todd, Nightwing/Robin/Superman) What I like )

[livejournal.com profile] blackfic's This is Our Love Story (White Collar, Peter/Elizabeth) What I like )

[personal profile] pocketmouse's Quantum Equilibrium and Little Red Book (Doctor Who, Amy/Rory + Eleven) What I like )

[livejournal.com profile] the_deep_magic's multi-fandom writing on the body recs list (several fandoms) What I like )

[personal profile] liodain's bingos (Watchmen, Dan/Rorschach fic and art) What I like )

[livejournal.com profile] igbc's Pierced Through the Heart (Starsky and Hutch, Starsky/Hutch) What I like )

Also if you're looking for even more fanworks, you could check out my kink bingo tag on delicious or thingswithwing's kink bingo tag. (We each only looked at half the things, actually, and then made short lists for each other, so there's a lot of non-overlapping stuff there.)

... in other news, guys, I am down to like eight open fic tabs, all of which are giant epic stories of giantness. Wow. Also I guess I might have to read some of those giant epic stories of giantness or something. Maybe I'll finally read The Hard Prayer! (Leftmost fic tab, open at least eight months. Someday I will read it.)

SGA in ten minutes or less

I have decided that my experience of SGA fandom can be summed up by three vids:

Another Sunday by [livejournal.com profile] jescaflowne This is for unicorns and rainbows and beanie babies and girl scout cookies and ridiculous AUs and also for laughing at ourselves for taking this show and these actors and especially Joe Flanigan seriously.

What is Eternal? by [livejournal.com profile] gnine This is for taking this show and these actors seriously. And ironically. At the same time. Like, I do sincerely believe in Rodney's manpain! And also it's hilarious. I feel like watching this vid is so much like my experience in SGA fandom, because [livejournal.com profile] gnine totally makes me buy it, and does these amazing cuts between current!Atlantis and future!Atlantis, and the bit about "judged on a scale that's been heavily weighted" makes me sniffle every time, and it really makes me believe in the team OT4. But then I kind of love it ironically, too, and can't believe that I'm taking it seriously.

Faggot by Gabby ([livejournal.com profile] sextagteam). And this is for John Sheppard, the guy who is totally wrong for the action-hero lead, for the commander of a military base, for the military at all. And yet there he is, being a big queer weirdo, throwing himself into suicide missions, always aware of the ways in which he doesn't quite fit. ILU John Sheppard, thanks for making a fandom for me! Also, notice how I've come around again to taking Joe Flanigan seriously? I'd better go watch Another Sunday again.

(Actually that reminds me that I have this theory that John Sheppard's character can be summed up by Faggot, [livejournal.com profile] hollywoodgrrl's Evening on the Ground, and [personal profile] thingswithwings's a lieutenant colonel is being beaten -- what's he's reacting to and what he does with it, and what he thinks of himself, and what he wants.)

\o/ yuletide!

I haven't read a whole bunch, but I have read a lot that I liked!

First, my two great yuletide stories )

And then some Misc Other Stories, too! Usually I try to read methodically from a random letter, but this year it all went wrong and I've got a bunch of fandoms from all over the place. So this is recs, part one of, like, a bazillion. Indiana Jones, Leverage, Mad Men, Moon, Inuit Mythology, PSAs, Mythbusters, RPF NPR, Nero Wolfe, and Some Like it Hot recs below the cut )

I'm kind of sad about the loss of the most-frequent-commenter stat from the old archive. Not that I could ever be in the top ten by any stretch of the imagination, but because I always enjoyed boggling at how many more stories other people had already read!

Star Trek recs and whining

1. Star Trek recs!

First, two gen stories by [personal profile] laurajv. These aren't officially part of a series, but they are both part of [personal profile] laurajv working out the consequences of the movie. And she's just so good at conceptualizing Vulcans as alien, and at world-building the future as different, and the Federation as a group that doesn't really understand each other, that I just completely fell for both of these stories instantly. These are true stories; this is the Federation, after. They are: The Unveiled Secret and The Word for World Is--.

And What We Don't Talk About by [personal profile] ellen_fremedon. Spock/Uhura, after. I'm not as keen on the world-building here, but I think she's done a really great job of working out what the movie means to Spock, and the choices he has to make now.

2. And now for the whining: I was awakened this morning at six am by street work. Loud, loud street work, and the workers chatting with each other at high volume, and the backhoe scraping along the ground, and the hammers breaking up the asphalt. Which, okay, I could've used a posted warning on the street to let me know -- what if I'd had a car parked here? -- but it is road maintenance season, these things happen, whatever. BUT. THEY KNOCKED OUT MY WATER. SOMETIME BEFORE 6 AM.

Yes. I woke up this morning to discover that I had no water. And since I had no warning, I don't have any in buckets or pitchers anything. So I can't shower, or brush my teeth, or flush the toilet, or have anything to drink. THANKS ROAD MAINTENANCE GUYS I HATE YOU. How in hell did they knock my water out? They're just scraping the asphalt off!

ETA: OH WAIT. Now I have water back. It's BROWN. I nearly brushed my teeth with it, I was so excited. BROWN YOU GUYS. THAT IS NOT A GOOD SIGN.

Guys, for my birthday [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings wrote me the most amazing B5 story EVER. She said she wanted to give me something I didn't have and this is totally it! It's beautiful post-series (sort-of) fic, with all the people I like best. And it's lovely and lyrical and it makes my heart hurt in just the right way.

Go check it out here, but watch for spoilers for basically the whole series.

Great vids I missed

The top five (*cough*) vids from 2008 that I posted a while back made me think about the vids that I missed when they were first released; I listed my vids in order of download, and I kept thinking "no, that's actually from 2006!" And then I totally wrote half of a post on it, and forgot I'd done so. *facepalm* But still, on the off chance that you too missed these vids in 2006, here are some of the best vids I came to late:

Sunset Boulevard, Angel: The Series, by [livejournal.com profile] butterfly (July 6, 2006; it was part of a Vividcon vid show this year)
This is amazing, so completely something I wanted out of the show and didn't get. I wish Gunn got to have this kind of coherent narrative, that his sacrifices and choices were made as clear on the show as they are in the vid. I thought I wouldn't like the vid, because it's the John Barrowman version of the song, and I greatly dislike John Barrowman's singing. BUT. This vid triumphs regardless, makes a beautiful thing of Gunn's plots on Angel, and I love it to pieces.

Holding Out for a Hero, Hercules: the Legendary Journeys, by [livejournal.com profile] marycrawford (February 27th, 2006; I found it when I went to Mary Crawford's website looking for Improper Dancing)
OMG. Just: OMG. I saw that Mary Crawford had done this vid, and [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings and I downloaded it and watched it together, and you guys, I have never occupied the gay male gaze as hard as I did here. Also: I almost can't believe that all of these clips appeared on the show. And I watched it recently. It's a glorious celebration of Hercules-as-hero, pursued by women and drag!Iolaus, and it celebrates Hercules's camp and magical realism and it's just lovely.

Cool Rider, Veronica Mars, by [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny (January 22nd, 2006; I found it when I was idly scrolling back through dualbunny's vids)
Another great, fun vid -- [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny has me in the introduction, which is just completely brilliant -- Logan on his scooter, Weevil on his bike. Man, way to take the awesome Logan/Weevil relationship on the show and pick just the perfect, most hilarious song ever. Nobody else knows what Logan needs!

Joy to the World, Starsky and Hutch, by [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss (December 29th, 2006; I hadn't been much in S&H, and then when [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings started watching, she was like "hey, did you know gianduja did some s&h vids? we should download them!" And then they were awesome.)
So, a lot of Starsky and Hutch vids celebrate the angst and the buddy-cop relationship, and hey, I was in the Sentinel in the 90s, of course I love those vids like crazy. But Starsky and Hutch is also great fun: it's fun to watch, it's fun to think about, it's fun to write about. I mean, they go undercover as gay hairdressers twice. And this vid celebrates the fun of S&H -- the Joy-to-the-World, the laughter, the crazy times. It's got beautiful timing, and great clip choice, and it's all about Starsky and Hutch having fun crazy times and laughing at and with each other. I watch it when I'm bummed out, because my bummed out can't survive [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss's awesome verse about the times they go undercover-straight, and the choruses with dancing. Whee!

Five on the Dime, Buffy, by [livejournal.com profile] shati (November 6, 2006)
and while you're there, download Boulevard of Broken Songs too (September 11, 2006)
[livejournal.com profile] shati does something awesome with Five on the Dime: she recontextualizes the sacrifices of the Scoobies, especially Willow, around Buffy. Just, completely amazing, the lines she draws between early seasons and later seasons, Buffy's sacrifices and a certain kind of hopelessness.

What About Everything, Babylon 5, by [livejournal.com profile] _happyme_ (the original is from 2005; remastered and/or edited August 8th, 2007. [livejournal.com profile] sineala sent the link to me a while back when I was lamenting the lack of B5 vids)
I really strongly suspect that if you've never seen B5, or only seen three minutes of it, that this vid will make absolutely no sense at all, because it's really fast and really contextual. (Also, if you're a B5 fan? It has season five in it. FYI. Also, I assume I don't have to tell you anything other than that it is a B5 vid, but just in case.) This vid fills me with glee -- it's Sheridan focused, but there's a verse for everybody, and everybody's pain and everybody's growth is in here -- the Ivanova bit is beautiful, the Garibaldi bit is great. [livejournal.com profile] _happyme_ has me from the moment of "some stubborn leaves / that didn't fall with the fall" -- it's exactly the kind of foreshadowing, exactly the kind of tentative-hopeful, that B5 is. Also, it has two of the most beautiful lines I've ever seen in a vid, when the song says "I find it hard to complain / when compared with," and it's G'Kar and Londo, their relationship really really fast in those two lines, because this might be a Sheridan vid, but, well. When compared with.

Yuletide recs, part the second

I'm such a slow yuletide reader, seriously. I've got thousand of stories left to read, but here is some more awesome:

Recs for DEBS, Buckaroo Banzai, Discworld, Rosencrantz and Guildernstern Are Dead, Robin McKinley's Damar-verse, and the Importance of Being Earnest under this here cut )

More later, when I ... actually finish even a single pass through the archive.

Yuletide recs, part one of a bazillion

Yuletide presents for me! I didn't get an email about them, but I found them anyway, and look what I got!

From my main yuletide author, I got something I didn't know I wanted -- I asked for The Dude character voice doing just about anything. But it turns out I wanted The Dude voice as he watched the ghost of Donny bowl. Not Undead, Just Not Dead, Big Lebowski.

And I also got a stocking stuffer! A really atmospheric Genly Ai and Estraven in the snow, and Genly's discomfort in his own body as he sees Estraven's body change. Cinders and Snow, Left Hand of Darkness.

*hugs stories*

***

And some stories that were for someone else, but I get to have anyway, in a completely random order:

Yuletide recs: Slings & Arrows, The Avengers, Madeleine L'Engle - Many Waters, Black Books, Laura Ingalls Wilder - Little House series, But I'm a Cheerleader, Calvin and Hobbes, xkcd )
