rec me more things to read/watch/etc

Yuletide nominations came up so fast this year that I didn't have time to finish (re)reading/watching/listening to all the things I wanted to finish before nominations, so I have set this whole weekend aside to check things out and decide what to nominate. It's just me and Mark O'Brien's poems and N.K. Jemisin's Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and Sleep Dealer and Whale Rider and that vid about how Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki broke up because Steve Nash would be able to fly with Amar'e Stoudemire. (Which was totally my mid-aughts basketball love story involving many sexy assists, but maybe I should nominate the 2007 Warriors team instead? That was a pretty great year, and J-Rich and Baron Davis were just awesome.) Decisions are hard guys.

And because I apparently don't have enough to re-read/watch/listen to (hahaha), I thought I would ask for some recs.

The criteria:
If I'm going to read/watch/listen to it before nominations are over, I need to be able to get it from my local small bookstore or library or netflix, or I need to be able to ahem it. (If it's something awesome that I can't get that way, tell me anyway and I'll see if I can find it before signups. Or I'll put it on next year's list.)

It should be created by chromatic or disabled or queer folks, or include chromatic or disabled or queer characters.

Things I like:
Speculative fiction! I like spaceships and robots and evil computers and good computers and aliens and AUs and space opera and time travel and clones and telepathy.

Stories that think about bodies. I really love it when things like shapeshifting make a difference in how people think about their bodies, or when there's a real sense of bodies moving through space, or double-embodiedness when people are connected to robots by cables, or whatever.

Nifty worldbuilding. And sources get bonus points if there are complicated politics and multiple religions and internal struggles and things.

Apocalypses and post-apocalypses.

Canonically kinky attitudes.

Things I don't like:
Celluloid Closeting. Or the equivalent done to chromatic or disabled characters. Nobody should end up dead or evil.

Vampires. I'm so done with vampires. Also succubi, and most demons, and just generally I'm less interested in supernatural themes.

Srs bzns real-life grittiness. Unless it's on a spaceship.

Heterosexual love and/or babies as the answer to all speculative fiction plot problems. If a book suggests that heterosexual love is going to save the world, or that there's hope for THE FUTURE now, I am likely to throw it across the room. Ditto any book that suggests a return to "natural" gender relations, "natural" states of being human, "natural" politics or whatever.

Yuletide reveal!

So, now I can figure out who wrote my stories!

On This Shore of the World was by [personal profile] sophinisba, and The Outskirter's Quest was by xylaria (possibly [livejournal.com profile] xylaria?). Thank you both!

I wrote four stories for yuletide this year. Here's how it went:

Dreams, Tranquility, Solitude (Moon 2009 movie). [livejournal.com profile] aitakute basically asked for dystopia and identity, and I thought: well. I can do that with the film, it's all there already.

In a way, this is a perfect fandom for me -- I love worldbuilding. In another way, well, I spent a really long time watching the movie and trying to figure out, like, the economics of helium three mining, and why three years, and the physics of lunar bases, and when the baby was supposed to be born. Then basically none of that went into the story, but it made me feel better.

La Adelita (Como agua para chocolate | Like Water for Chocolate). This was my first treat; I read the author letter again on Monday night or Tuesday morning, and really wanted to read a story for the prompt. Then I ended up writing a lot of this while I was on the plane on Tuesday. I hadn't read the book or seen the movie since like 1993, but I got it from the library early Wednesday morning and sped through the relevant parts to make appropriate changes (including my facepalm when I realized that Gertrudis canonically joined Villa's army -- I'd totally thought she was a Zapatista) and see how I'd done with tone.

This story is kind of like, things [personal profile] eruthros loves: magical realism, bodies, recipes, women's knowledge. Check. Also I really am going to nominate Around the Day in Eighty Worlds or Hopscotch or something next year.

Rough (anthropomofic web 2.0). Um. Well. I got home from doing all my Christmas shopping in basically two days and I was tired and cranky and I wanted to write some yuletide treats but I just couldn't face looking at source. So I wrote a story about the pages in yuletide archive instead, based on a prompt that I'd seen go by on the pinch hit list that had a line like "or anything really." I was careful to keep it under a thousand words, though, because [personal profile] elynross said somewhere that people could go wild for treats, and use just the fandom if we thought the recipient would like it, but that folks couldn't do that for full-length stories.

The Abbreviated History of the Flashlight (The Lost Room + four other crossovery fandoms). I wrote this in about half an hour, an hour before the end of yuletide uploads. I really liked the idea, but I think it came out very much rushed -- I'll have to try again when it's not, like, "aaaah do I post it or not?"

I also acquired source for two other treats I wanted to write, but I just couldn't face watching anything. Perhaps I will do them as NYR stories.

\o/ yuletide!

I haven't read a whole bunch, but I have read a lot that I liked!

First, my two great yuletide stories )

And then some Misc Other Stories, too! Usually I try to read methodically from a random letter, but this year it all went wrong and I've got a bunch of fandoms from all over the place. So this is recs, part one of, like, a bazillion. Indiana Jones, Leverage, Mad Men, Moon, Inuit Mythology, PSAs, Mythbusters, RPF NPR, Nero Wolfe, and Some Like it Hot recs below the cut )

I'm kind of sad about the loss of the most-frequent-commenter stat from the old archive. Not that I could ever be in the top ten by any stretch of the imagination, but because I always enjoyed boggling at how many more stories other people had already read!

Treats written: one. (In a fandom I haven't thought about since like 1995, ha.)

Treats currently percolating: LOTS. (Including one for a fandom I just encountered today.)

Shopping done: um.

Determination: high.

I hope uploads stay open late and that my hands hold out, because there are all these prompts that deserve stories!

I have uploaded my yuletide story! The last two thousand words or so were written in hundred word segments in alternation with heavy applications of ice, but it's DONE.

Now: more ice packs. And BEER.

Later: possibly reviewing source for treats. *facepalm*

Okay, now this is just ridiculous.

Guess who woke up this morning with new symptoms? And then called an advice nurse and then went in to see a doctor at the clinic? And now has a brand-new bigger!stronger!better!more hideous! hand and wrist brace? And more different and exciting medication that has to be carefully slotted into the schedule?

OH YES THAT WOULD BE ME.

*facepalm*

I was planning on writing some of my yuletide story with that afternoon. (And also with that HAND. Immobilization sucks.)

I can still do it! I have an idea and a structure and some scenes and many words! I have two more days! I just need to figure out how to best type with this brace.

ETA: I forgot to mention that my new brace is produced by a company called "Freedom Splints." Srsly.

The first annual yuletide writing party!

[personal profile] thingswithwings and I decided to treat yuletide like a study group. So we had [personal profile] livrelibre over for a yuletide-writing-party! To make it more like a study group, we ate [personal profile] thingswithwings's chocolate chip cookies, we ordered pizza and drank beer, and we took occasional tangents into legal procedure ("no, like, who sits in front of the bar thing in the court?") and academic field names ("why can't I google backwards?") and html coding questions ("does the AO3 allow that code?") and the premise of Jeremiah ("see, all the adults die...").

And now I have some words! I don't promise that they're good, but I have some scenes and stuff. Success! I just need to pretend I'm a college student. A college student who writes papers before 11 pm on the day they're due. A college student who, in fact, is not at all the kind of college student I was. Um.

Misc stuff I have been meaning to post

If I don't post things, then they just build up and build up in semagic until it seems insurmountable. Today I have decided to say "fuck that" to that problem, so here are ... a bunch of misc and unrelated things, some of which have been in semagic for months.

1. We made lots of awesome food for American Thanksgiving which was like three weeks ago now, but this text has been sitting here for most of those weeks so I'm posting it anyway. I might forget how to make these tasty brussels sprouts by next fall! More details about the recipes under the cut to spare you guys )

2. I'm currently going to PT threeish days a week for hand and wrist and knee and ankle and etc joint pain, and I still have partly immobilized hands. It makes me cranky and anxious, especially because nobody seems to know what's wrong, and why this problem is worse than the previous ones. Blather about doctors )

3. Some things I forgot about when I was doing yuletide nominations, so now I'm putting them here for next year )

3a. It is a sad state of affairs when your yuletide story notes are long enough to be posted to the archive. *pokes at file* Now, if only I had a story...

4. Some random things I have learned from kink_bingo )

4a. This isn't a random thing that I learned from [community profile] kink_bingo, it's a true story from planning last year that I've always meant to post so I won't someday forget it )

5. I want a firefox extension, and I can't find it! Here's what bugs me )

THERE. Now I have a completely blank update field. And I'll add some stuff from today to make sure it stays that way:

6. This Penny Arcade strip pretty much explains the way I feel when people say things like "you're just watching it to hate it."

7. Oh my god, lj, seriously? You're seriously going to make gender a mandatory field and make male and female the only options within that field? Seriously? I just. Fuck that shit. I can't put words to my RAGE.

some of my favorite yuletide letters!

So, okay, I've been reading many of the yuletide letters linked in the main post, because they are full of fannish joy. I read them in fandoms I don't know, in fandoms I love, in fandoms I've barely heard of, and I rejoice in the glee and the fannishness and the yuletideyness of yuletide. And so, because I thought some of y'all might enjoy this, too, I've pulled out some cool requests I've seen recently. Presume that there are spoilers for all the fandoms behind the cuts, because sometimes I have no idea what the source even is and can't warn more carefully. (To my shame, I have never read Mercedes Lackey.)

Eddie Izzard - Stand Up Routines )
Indiana Jones universe )
Total Eclipse of the Heart (music video) )
Mercedes Lackey - Valdemar series )
Aristophanes - Lysistrata )
Enid Blyton - St Clare's )
RPF Misc Actors (George Lazenby) )
My Little Pony )

Also, the entirety of kiki-eng's Canadian Politics request, which is too large and picspammy for me to reproduce here.

Dear yuletide writer,

Thanks for offering to write one of my tiny fandoms! These are all fandoms of my heart; I love them, and I love the characters I asked for, so I would pretty much be happy with anything about them. I want you to have fun writing, and not feel too stressed out by what you think I want -- I want you to be only as stressed as you'd like to be :)

If you're the kind of writer who wants more specifics in a request, I've put some things I like and don't like below this cut )

If you're having some yuletide-I-matched-on-what panic, here is an overview of my fandoms and how to get ahold of them )

And finally, because I'm the sort of person who loses important email, I reproduce the requests here )

a general fannish post

1. [personal profile] thingswithwings wrote a how-we-vidded-yuletide retrospective post that is ... pretty much exactly what the vid project was like, but shorter.

2. I want a new term for a particular kind of pairing-fic. See, there's best friends!fic (Blair/Jim, Starsky/Hutch, Gus/Shawn) and there's what I think of as enemies!fic (Harry Potter/any Voldemort supporter, Mulder/Krycek, Johnny Smith/Stillson, John/Kolya) and then there's this other thing, this sort of sniping-but-on-the-same-side thing. And sometimes people call it enemies!fic, and I'm always a bit "huh?" because these guys aren't enemies. They're just not best friends! If one of them hasn't killed the other's mentor, if one of them isn't trying to bring about the apocalypse, if one of them isn't busy creating an evil clone army, it's just not the same! It's "sometimes we bicker" fic! And yet people keep telling me that it's the opposite of the bff fic, that if you don't write best friends this is the other option, and I am continually weirded.

Some example pairings that I thought of just now:
- Psych, Shawn/Lassiter. Listen, they are both on the same side, neither of them has killed the other's father, they just kind of dislike each other. They both want to arrest guys! They sometimes work together! But not as much as Shawn and Gus.

- The Dead Zone, Johnny/Walt. They are kinda suspicious of each other, okay, and Walt sometimes thinks Johnny's a big weirdo, and they are both in love with the same woman, but ... not enemies. Not BFFs, either.

- Eureka, Jack Carter/Nathan Stark. They are both in love with the same woman (sigh) and they don't like each other but they, you know, save the world together a lot.

- The X-Files, Mulder/Skinner. They're on the same side -- well, most of the time, depending on what side Chris Carter thought Skinner was on today -- but they disagree sometimes. Mostly they do Stern Authority Figure/Snarky Subordinate. Like, in fic, when Skinner spanked Mulder, it was for How Dare You Break Into That Military Base Without Telling Me, I Worry About You reasons, not Damn You, Stop Trying to Take Over the World With Evil Robots reasons.

So what should I call this? Clearly "guys who kind of don't like each other and are a little bit snarky but neither of them killed the other one's father fic" is a little long. [personal profile] thingswithwings suggests "cantankerous acquaintance fic," which certainly gets at the part where these aren't guys who are BFFs and aren't srs enemies.

Like, is it just my fannish history? Is it just that I read Mulder/Krycek and Harry/Snape (when Snape was supposed to be evil)? I feel like these aren't the same things as what I'm used to calling enemies!fic. I want more archnemeses in my enemies!fic.

3. I am sad to say that Super Mario Galaxy has been rejected from yuletide -- the Mario universe was added to the list of ineligible franchises after nominations were over. I am full of woe, for I wanted to ask for cool genre-bending fic (Freudian meditations on Cosmic Mario! kinky Star Bunny fic!), and also because it means I wasted a nomination -- I went and looked up the fandom before I nominated, and was pretty sure that it would count as small enough on its own, and Mario wasn't on the franchise list. I could have nominated The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air instead! Or Uzak (Distant), where there should have been HUGS. I know that betrays the premise of the movie, but after I watched it, I wanted hugs. Or Carol Emshwiller's Carmen Dog, which was my favorite book when I was in junior high. (Finding out that Le Guin loved it, in that article, made me all starry-eyed. Ursula K Le Guin! Carol Emshwiller! Together! It was like, baby!eruthros does RPF.) So now I am a little sad.

4. I watched White Collar the other day; here is some spoilery talk about it )

here are some things I wrote down

On December 26th last year, I wrote down what I wanted for yuletide this year. And that was:
"Nominate yuletide challenge itself! database/dynamically generated yuletide treat request page enemies!fic!"
... yes. Seriously. I was maaaaaybe a little yuletide!obsessed at the time.

Also I said that I wanted Eddie Izzard fic. "Eddie Izzard/Steve, on the moon." Per this email to myself, I contemplated Eddie Izzard/The President of Burundi. I am now thinking about asking for some sort of Eddie Izzard fic. I nominated it, anyway. And I wasn't even thinking about it three days ago! This is how I am with yuletide nominations -- I change my mind constantly.

All of which is to say, hurrah for yuletide nominations! I nominated fandoms a couple hours ago, but I totally just went back and changed them -- I realized that nobody had nominated Super Mario Galaxy. I hope someone asks for creepy Freudian Cosmic!Mario fic, or intriguingly kinky Star Bunny fic, or adorable Toad Brigade orgy fic.

***

[personal profile] thingswithwings and I baked a pumpkin pie a couple days ago. (Substitution: all whipping cream instead of half milk, 3/4 cup of honey for a single recipe). Last week, I made muffins! This means two things: first, that it's fall, and I'm happy to have the oven on; and second, that this is really our apartment now. Pie is the official inauguration of an apartment!

Also, it's really tasty pie. We made a recipe and a half, because that was the size of the pumpkin, so now we have pumpkin tartlets too. I totally had a slice of pumpkin pie for first breakfast yesterday. YUM.

(Between the pumpkin pie and the hum of the radiators, you can tell it's fall here. We just gave in and turned the heat on, but to be fair to us it was 58* inside before we caved. And it was COLD.)

***

Also I would like to rec [personal profile] isagel's new Touching Evil vid, Wither and Die. I know next to nothing about the series, but I the vid is gorgeous and interesting and sort of heart-clenchy even without the context.

Lists are awesome

1. I hurt two fingers doing PT this morning -- the nominally-strong fingers I use to provide resistance for my isometric strengthening exercises. Yes, seriously.

2. I can't for the life of me find Torchwood promo pictures from seasons one and two, pre-Children of Earth. My google-fu has failed, hard. Where the hell are they? Help plz fandom!

3. I am looking forward to yuletide lots and lots, but I can't figure out what I want to ask for! Last year I had this huge giant list of fandoms that I wished were yuletide fandoms (sometimes just because I wished they could go in the vid), and it was hard to narrow it down further, and it is only worse this year, as I have now realized a) that Pogo isn't a yuletide fandom and b) that I totally ship Pogo Possom and Porky Pine. Porky takes Pogo a flower every Christmas morning! He's only pretending to be a cynic! My heart is touched.

Also I want there to be more Bruce/Johnny Dead Zone fic, so there's that. And perhaps I want Steerswoman series Bel-fic, in which she is awesome and amazing. And perhaps I will ask again for Better Than Chocolate transfic (Judy/Frances!), though I am always concerned about whether it would be done well.

Other things that are not yuletide fandoms but should be )

What do you guys want for yuletide? I ask because I'm curious, though it will inevitably lead to more things to add to my list of possibilities this year.

4. I maaaaaybe have spent a little too much time looking at the list of yuletide fandoms in the last, oh, year or so.

Recontextualizing journal posts in light of yuletide

Throughout December, I kept joking with [personal profile] thingswithwings that one of the most amusing parts of finally revealing the yuletide vid will be my ability to retroactively tag half my posts from the last six months as "vidding yuletide." We tried not to post about it, unless it was potentially something we could legitimately be watching anyway, but even so a bunch slipped through. SO! Here are a couple of posts that benefit greatly from context:

Critique of a critique of a BBC film. The BBC film in question is the Rupert Everett Sherlock Holmes, which I discovered in October and is my favoritest Holmes ever; the reason I saw the hilarious there-was-no-sex-in-Victorian-England critique is that I was watching a documentary on Holmes and Watson's relationship, hoping it would be a shortcut to a better clip. (At that point, I'd watched more than half of the Jeremy Brett Holmes, and was starting to despair. As if they were never in the same frame except in the dark!)

Comment on Jeremiah. I was watching Jeremiah hoping for Jeremiah/Kurdy, and I got no love! All I wanted was the two of them in the same frame leaning in, maybe hugging -- we had room in the hugging section. But no!

Henry Jones gave birth to Indy? I was not, in fact, watching the Indiana Jones specials just for funsies. No. We were tracking down a single shot of Indy-with-whip -- we wanted him whipping someone, but the camera always cuts away in the movies, so I ended up watching all the specials hoping for something without the camera jump, when he was practicing or something. (Tip for future vidders: yes, but only in a street with 1970s cars.) Then we just used the shot of him pulling his whip anyway, because it fit and actually worked quite well.

Accidental seaquest slash vid. One of our techniques, with a fandom we didn't know, or hadn't seen in a long time, was to check out youtube vids to remind ourselves of the cinematography and characters. This dates to the period when we were talking seriously about including Lucas/Darwin sleeping next to each other in the "baby baby baby" section, before we realized that it was nuts. Anyway, accidental Bridger/Lucas slash, which we almost vidded instead, but then it wasn't a yuletide pairing.

John and Rodney as PC/Mac. I was watching all the PC/Mac commercials on youtube, and thusly, I began to compare them to John and Rodney.

Oddly, many of my descriptions of sources to [personal profile] thingswithwings eventually turned into "and, actually, it would be a really interesting SGA fusion."

Awesome daily show segments. I was watching the Daily Show back archives "for reasons that don't need explaining at this juncture" -- then, because it was for a super-sekrit vidding project; and now, because y'all know what said vidding project is. I love Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert kinda a lot, so I was determined to find absolutely the best clip ever.

Yuletide reveal hurrah!

1) A Host of Sparrows, Emma Bull's Bone Dance. Please don't read this if you haven't read the book -- I love the book times a billion, and this story spoils the best part of the book. ( Bone Dance is like B5, in a way: you can't use the best part to convince people to read it, because it's a million times better if you don't see it coming.)

more on Bone Dance and this story )

2) Paradise Lost, which is, uh, NC-17 LOLcats fic with voyeurism.

This is a long facepalmy story )

I hear tell that I have scarred a number of people for life. Um. Yay?

3) Poolside, Cary Grant/Marlon Brando.

Recs for DEBS, Buckaroo Banzai, Discworld, Rosencrantz and Guildernstern Are Dead, Robin McKinley's Damar-verse, and the Importance of Being Earnest under this here cut )

Yuletide recs, part one of a bazillion

Yuletide presents for me! I didn't get an email about them, but I found them anyway, and look what I got!

From my main yuletide author, I got something I didn't know I wanted -- I asked for The Dude character voice doing just about anything. But it turns out I wanted The Dude voice as he watched the ghost of Donny bowl. Not Undead, Just Not Dead, Big Lebowski.

And I also got a stocking stuffer! A really atmospheric Genly Ai and Estraven in the snow, and Genly's discomfort in his own body as he sees Estraven's body change. Cinders and Snow, Left Hand of Darkness.

*hugs stories*

***

And some stories that were for someone else, but I get to have anyway, in a completely random order:

Yuletide recs: Slings & Arrows, The Avengers, Madeleine L'Engle - Many Waters, Black Books, Laura Ingalls Wilder - Little House series, But I'm a Cheerleader, Calvin and Hobbes, xkcd )

Hurrah for yuletide day!

Remember the super-sekrit massive vidding project that [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings and I have been working on for more than eight months?

Well, it is super sekrit no longer! We now reveal:

One-Night Fandoms: a tribute to yuletide by eruthros and thingswithwings. You can watch it and read more about it on the main post, linked above.

Brief details: It's not a vid for the yuletide challenge, it's a vid of the yuletide challenge. 191 sources, all of them yuletide fandoms.

I still can't believe we did this. We spent eight months on it, combing the yuletide archive, finding source, watching entire television shows in a single week. We looked at more than 230 sources, many of which we'd never even heard of before we began the project. And we fell in love with yuletide over and over again in the process.
