It's very much a show that hires from the cult-tv-actor pool. I mean, Mira Furlan, Terry O'Quinn, and so on.

And you are exactly right! That is what is going on. Xena and Hercules were getting stoned and being queer and don't care what you think, whereas Lost is all "love me? please?"
