Thank you so much for the rec! I hadn't thought of it as "undercover as straight" at the time, but you're right - that's exactly what they were doing - and FWIW, I don't know anything about the band Three Dog Night but I'm positive that's exactly how they intended the lyric to be interpreted :-).
