What boggles my mind is that it's clear from their FAQ that they see slash fandom as a giant pile of unprocessed data. ("The Internet offers large, unprecedented sources of data on human activity: one of these data sets is fan fiction.")
But it's not unprocessed. Fans discuss this stuff, all of it, all of the implications, every possible angle, at great length. (GREAT LENGTH.) There must be hundreds of thousands of pages of fans discussing issues of identification, desire, queer identity, and the appeal of every different genre of fic imaginable. So I'm not inclined to trust their conclusions when they haven't bothered to read any of what we say about ourselves.
