Ahhh, then the only basic difference with the US would be mice, I think! Where I've lived, the hierarchy goes: bats - wtf, who does that even happen to! (fruit) flies - oh dear! flies - messy student! mice - slovenly! roaches - disgusting!

I don't know what rats are supposed to mean here, but I have had them - giant Norwegian roof rats that came in one really bad winter. Ugh.
