Yeah, I sort of read LeGuin that way too - it was only a lot later that I understood the Hainish Cycle as a connected set of works, because a lot of them really can be read on their own. (Wikipedia has a list of the Hainish short stories, though.) And Four Ways to Forgiveness is great!

Also, there were many great things on the NPR list!
