Thank you for making me a vid!

I have a couple things that I put outside the cut tag, because I have two visual triggers:

1) Fast, high contrast flashes of lights or colors. This can be triggered by strobe lights, strobe effects, glitch effects, full-screen lighting effects, or repeated lightning strikes. It can also be triggered by stutter cuts (very fast intercuts of 2-3 frames) where there is high contrast in the footage used for the stutter effect. Stutter cuts are fine between two similar scenes, but not between one dark green and one bright red lit scene, between a nighttime and daytime scene, etc. Flashing has to be very fast to bother me—think three lightning strikes in a second (dark, light, dark, light, dark, light, dark in one second).

2) Frame rate fuckery—when a show or a vid plays 24 fps footage in 30 fps or vice versa. So, like, when a film puts footage at the wrong frame rate to make it feel awkward or tense, which is super common in action films. (For example, the Bucky/Steve knife fight on the street in Winter Solider.) It can also happen by accident, if footage at one frame rate is put into a project with a different frame rate, or sometimes when a show needs to stretch or compress footage and they do it by duplicating every third frame.

I'll call these out in the source notes below for any fandom where they're relevant.

It can also happen by accident, if footage at one frame rate is put into a project with a different frame rate, or sometimes when a show needs to stretch or compress footage and they do it by duplicating every third frame. (You might not be able to see this—many people see this as smooth motion, because our brains are already interpreting stills as motion.)

I made five vids for Festivids this year! They are:

... so yes, bironic was totally right in the Guess the Festividder post, I did indeed make four very multisource Moby Dick vids for Festivids drawing from approximately 100 years of Moby Dick adaptations. These were all for nicosilang!

And then I made one Janelle Monáe vid for livrelibre's great request! (I said to thingswithwings "someone might guess me for this, because I've vidded Janelle Monáe before, but also they might not, because I'm not being completionist about it." Nobody did guess me.)

In the watch party for festivids, somebody said something like "wow, I wonder how long this vidder has wanted to make all these Moby Dick vids." The answer is: since October, during signups for this years' festivids. I didn't read Moby Dick until after assignments went out. I hadn't seen a single one of these Moby Dick adaptations before several months ago.

Vid: Ordinary Day (Great Canadian Baking Show)

Sooooo I finished my three Frontera Verde vids and decided I wanted to do something floofy as a last minute treat! I was considering several different treat options and I settled on the Great Canadian Baking Show.

I was making this vid for thingswithwings but she ended up giving me the song for it - the song obviously needed to be Canadian, so I was listening to some Canadian music playlists and rejecting songs. I complained to twwings about how the playlist only had Great Big Sea songs about the end of the world and ghosts and stuff, and she was like wtf, you should vid Ordinary Day, it is so cheerful and it was on the radio constantly in the 90s. And then I listened to it and yup, there was my song!

I started clipping for this on Tuesday of go-live week and I thought "oh this'll be a speedy project" but it TURNS OUT clipping a baking show takes forever. I actually only made it through four episodes of season 2 (I skipped to find the good ones and hit the finale) and I still didn't put the first clip down on the timeline until 4 PM on Friday! So this vid doesn't fully represent the amazingness of TGCBS in all its glory, but it's still a good time and I'm glad I made it. I vidded the bridge first because it was obvious that the accordion bridge was for running around!

Vids: Three Frontera Verde vids for festivids

I made three Frontera Verde vids for bironic for festivids! bironic had some really amazing prompts for the source, which I hadn't seen, so I watched it after festivids assignments went out.

Frontera Verde is a really interesting canon, both structurally - one of the main characters is found dead in the first episode - and tonally. I ended up wanting to make vids for three of bironic's prompts in three pretty different genres! I don't think there's a single clip that's in all three, except for a particularly lush jungle scene that was a very helpful clip for overlays.
