Dear Festividder

Dear Festividder,

Thank you for making me a vid! I like a lot of detail when I read letters, so that's how I write mine, but please don't feel obligated to read all of it if that would make the exchange less fun for you. I like many different kinds of vids and I like these sources, so you're pretty sure to make something I'll like.

There's just one outside the cut tag thing that I'd like you to know, because I have one visual trigger: super fast flashes of lights or colors that have high contrast. Almost all vids are fine for me, but some that intercut two scenes that have very different lighting for two or three frames at a time can trigger this, depending on the amount of contrast between the two scenes, as can strobe lights (in the source) or strobe light effects (in the vid). If you're concerned that you might get close to this, please feel free to run a sample by [personal profile] thingswithwings or ask me about a vid with a similar technique.

General Preferences: I like a lot of things! In terms of things people often worry about in exchanges, I'm fine with: any rating, outside source, crossovers (lbr the Billy Porter and Lizzo crossover dance vid would be amazing), still footage, dialog over the vid, instrumentals, kink, sex, villainy, comedy, parody, gen, slash, femslash, het, canon pairings, non-canon pairings, critiques, hugs, action, violence, deep character studies, and a bunch of other things I haven't thought of. I have a particular fondness for queer themes, for TEAMS and FOUND FAMILIES, and for places and spaces being related to people and feelings.

Music: I am happy to watch vids to all kinds of music! And also vids to non-music, like spoken word pieces or sound effects or other things.

However, I'm hard of hearing in a way that makes it difficult to parse lyrics that are mumbly or obscured by the instrumentation (but I hear volume and instruments and melody just fine). I'd really appreciate it if you offered subtitles, especially if you intercut dialog and song lyrics.

Billy Porter RPF [multi]

Billy Porter is an actor, singer, and dancer; he currently plays Pray Tell on Pose. He has also done a bunch of other cool things, like Kinky Boots on Broadway, a whole cover album of Richard Rogers songs, and a season of American Horror Story.

Sample video (contains brief ableist language):

Request details: Billy Porter's red carpet appearances this year have been AMAZING. And his interviews are amazing as well! I'm so happy about his interviews about why he wears dresses, and I love the incredibly fashionable work he is doing when he wears dresses to some appearances and suits to others. I deeply appreciate his joy, his sincerity, and his sense of humor. I'd love a vid that was all fashion and dance and singing, or a vid about his life story, or a vid about his various kinds of acting work! But whatever it is, please make it FABULOUS.

Content note: Billy Porter recently wrote about his experience of being sexually abused as a child, and some articles about his life may include excerpts from his writing on this subject. The articles I've seen that quote this have all had explicit content warnings, but often the warning doesn't say what the explicit content actually is, so fyi it might be child sexual abuse.

Fast Color [film, safety]

An incredibly gorgeous film about three generations of black women with superpowers! It's a post-apocalypse film, a superhero film, and a family drama film all at once. The family story gives the actors (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, and Saniyya Sidney) an incredible amount to work with, and they knock it out of the park.

Trailer:

Request details: I love basically everything about this film? The cinematography screams out to be vidded, and that's definitely a big part of why I'm here! But even more than that I'm interested in the relationship between Ruth and Bo, both of whom are so interesting as characters and so interesting together. Also, I think it might be fun to play with the elements of the apocalypse as an emotional metaphor - this movie does really great things with the connections between places and people.

Content notes: seizures, recovering from drug addiction, generational trauma

Lizzo RPF [multi]

Lizzo is a singer and songwriter and a fat woman dancing her ass off in tight bodysuits! Truth Hurts and Tempo and Juice are all amazing songs omg.

Sample video:

Request details: Lizzo's music has been my answer to dreary mornings this year: feeling bummed out? Try listening to Lizzo! I'd love a vid about her joy, or a vid about the work of making music and videos, or a vid that was all dancing and singing, or whatever else you can think of! Also as a fat person I'm really dedicated to Lizzo's amazing sexy fatness, I want to watch her dance forever and I'm so happy about the Big Grrls she dances with. "If you can love me, you can love yourself."

Mark Does Stuff [web]

The Mark who Does Stuff is Mark Oshiro; he watches, reads aloud, and plays canons that he is unspoiled for and reacts to them as he goes. His most popular project is probably Mark Reads Harry Potter, but he's been doing this for years and has reacted to a ton of great media!

Sample video:

Update: I'm really sorry to say that Mark's ex-partner and good friend Baize passed away suddenly in early December. Baize is in some of the Mark Does Stuff videos, especially Steven Universe. Mark has written a bit about this (here on Mark Watches).

Request details: I listen to Mark read things at work! I appreciate his social justice work and his reactions and his stories a lot. I know a lot of Mark Does Stuff fans who love the hilariously wrong predictions best, but what I love most is his intense delight, how much he loves media, and his astonished and thrilled responses to plot twists that he didn't see coming and also to plot twists that he did see coming. His reactions to things like Garnet's song in Jailbreak are delightful and make me feel like part of a fannish community! Also I love when he sings along to things, all his facial expressions, when he shouts "no!" at something ominous, when he hides in his hands or his shirts, when there is a surprise cat, and when he falls out of the view of the camera laughing.

FYI: I asked Mark's permission to nominate him for Festivids and he said yes; there is a possibility that he will watch any vid made for this fandom. If that makes you uncomfortable, you may want to note that you'd prefer he didn't watch it in your vid post.

Availability: Mark Reads videos are on youtube for free. Mark Watches episodes are for sale from Mark's site, but there is also a Mark-authorized site for sharing extra downloads of these eps called The Black Market as well as some torrents (thanks to [personal profile] kate_nepveu for seeding).

Mars Rovers RPF [multi]

Six autonomous exploration robots have landed on Mars, all of them sent by huge teams of people and all of them intended to explore the planet's surface. Curiosity is still active; Spirit, Opportunity, and Sojourner finished their missions and then lost contact with earth and are now silent on Mars. The other two, Mars 2 and 3, were sent in the 70s and were not successful.

Sample video:

Request details: So the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab videos about Mars Rovers kind of make me cry? These are tiny robots, but huge projects - tested on earth, launched into space, and very slowly discovering Mars stratigraphy and geology and taking panoramas and photos of themselves and their own shadows. They've traveled incredibly short distances - Opportunity made it only 45 km in 14 years - but they've still gathered a ton of information. I would love a vid about their travels, about what they found, about their completed missions, or about the giant teams and communities that sent them into space: little robots alone on Mars except for the voices of their teams reaching out to them.

Also, I put this on my festivids list when NASA officially declared Opportunity's mission complete, but Opportunity is the most-vidded rover (inasmuch as a festivids sized fandom can have a most-vidded character) and I'd love to see Curiosity and Spirit and Sojourner get some love as well! And I've never seen footage of Mars 2 or 3 but if you had some and wanted to include them that would be cool too.

Paradox (Marvel Comics Character Earth-80324)

Paradox is an anti-gravity dancer, a secret agent, and a shapeshifter - and he is also possibly the first queer superhero character in Marvel comics. He's in two incredibly weird comics in the 80s, set in a future with an oppressive space empire that is completely unrelated to the rest of Marvel canon.

Sample page:
Paradox dancing in space

Request details: I LOVE HIM. Paradox is a secret agent for the ISA, an oppressive space CIA-ish organization; he has been nonconsensually genetically engineered to be a shapeshifter. The ISA is super uncomfortable with his queerness (content note for a few instances of queer slurs). The ISA sends him off to investigate rebels; he meets a team of other ISA agents and they all become pals. They pursue the rebels ... and then Paradox kills his own ISA team. FOR REAL. Turns out he's been a space rebel all along! Then he takes the form of one of his team members and KILLS THE EMPEROR. In a giant explosion. ILU you angry shape-shifting space bi. That's basically all I want in a vid: the angry shape-shifting rebel space bisexual dude who blows the emperor up.

Paradox's main story appears in Marvel Preview #24 in 1980; his backstory comes later in Marvel's Bizarre Adventures #30 in 1982. Then in 2011 he universe-hops into modern comics and the 616 universe in Wolverine: The Best There Is. (This Wolverine comic is terrible and most of it is kind of unreadable but I'm happy that Paradox is in it, shapeshifting his way around the 616 universe and wearing his 1980s leather pants and white flowy shirt and black vest and leaning dramatically against walls.)

Content notes: queer slurs, dead queer women, non-consensual drug use, fridging

Availability: Because these are old one-off comics, they can be hard to find and they're not on Marvel Unlimited. If you can't find them, ask [personal profile] thingswithwings and she will hook you up.

Raising Dion [tv]

Raising Dion is a show about Dion, a kid who suddenly has superpowers, and about his mom, Nicole. It has a single mom story and a mysterious superpower origin story and really everyone in it is interesting.

Trailer:

Request details: I just finished watching this and I LOVE IT. I love Nicole and Dion and Kat and Charlotte and Esperanza and I would adore a vid about any of them! I would also love a vid that deals with the arts vs science question that the show brings up in the last episode: something that brings Nicole's dance and Mark's science together! I do not give a single fuck about Pat though. (FYI if you're concerned about the visual triggers, none of the lightning scenes in this bothered me, but the flashing fluorescent lightning in that one hospital room scene did.)

Content notes: occasional lightning / bright flashing video, stalking, aggressive dude feelings, racism
