Songvid Rec and Review: Action vids, part two
See the first part here.
Myrtle & Eunice's Buffy vid 'Another One Bites the Dust,' song by Queen
This is another season-specific Buffy vid, this one dealing with all the bad guys in season one. The beat of the vid is fairly deliberate, so the mood of the vid is also slower than that of many action vids. The song's lyrics, though, work so well for the vampire slaying.
I like the first clip -- Buffy pulling a stake out very slowly and deliberately. I'm not a big fan, as I think I may have mentioned, of effects where one clip sweeps over another, so I don't much like the transition to the next clip (and a few of the other transitions), but I like the next clip in combination with the first if I ignore the transition. Because deliberate!Buffy is kicking. Ass.
Favorite clip: at about 2:30, on Buffy's feet, when Buffy's end-of-season walk in the white dress is synced to the beat. Also, at about 0:40, Willow whacking the robot-demon with the fire extinguisher to the beat on the word "beat."
I think this song works really well with the slower shots, like the power walks, particularly the Darla and Co. slo-mo power walk at 1:00. However, that means it's nowhere near as manic as a lot of action vids. It's still fun, but a little slow.
This WAS available at Myrtle & Eunice's vids, but that seems to be down -- anyone know where it's gone?
Luminosity and Kamil's Buffy vid 'It's the End of the World as We Know It,' song by REM.
This vid actually isn't season specific! Weird, huh? Again, the chorus makes it a good song choice for Buffy, but verses must have been really, really difficult -- REM is fast, mumbly, and random, which must be difficult to vid to.
The vid itself ends up being incredibly non-linear in terms of clip context, probably partly because of the verses. For example, for the line " left her wasn’t coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck" Luminosity and Kamil do shots of the diving board from "The Gift (season five finale), Buffy running in blue (season two), and vampWillow licking Willow's neck (season three). And that's just one sample. Whoof. I think that the verses are interpreted maybe a little too literally; the literalism is fun, in a way, because if you know the song you think "wow, what're they going to use for 'Leonard Bernstein?'" And then you're amused by well-picked clips. If you don't know the song, you're still amused, but probably less speculative. Just a guess.
Favorite clips: Buffy grabbing Angelus's sword on "save yourself, serve yourself" and then kissing him to "listen to your heart bleed." And I think the clips for the chorus were chosen really well; rather than doing the apocalypse moments, they use some of the best character moments: Wishverse!Giles smashing Anya's necklace and Oz waking up to realize he's a werewolf.. I won't give them all away here, but there are even more fun ones as the vid goes on.
For me, it's a little too non-linear and literal to really love. I think it's a fun vid, and I enjoy it, but I haven't watched it in a while; I just don't feel the desire to watch it again.

Curufea's B5 vid 'Let It Be Known' to 'Rocket Science,' song by The Pimps. I think. The vidder doesn't ID the song, but I googled the lyrics and I think that's it. I include it here partly because I try to find rare vids and vidders in corners of fandom, and this certainly counts.
I really don't know how I feel about this vid. I don't know what the vidder's intent is at all, which is unusual -- you can generally at least guess -- do they mean this to be an action vid? A character vid? Is it Sheridan/Delenn? What? I think it's intended to be Sheridan/Delenn AND an action vid, but I'm not at all sure.
It certainly starts like an action vid: the first entire verse is Space Battle, with shooting sorta-synced to the beat. Which makes it seem like a vid about Sheridan wanting a Vorlon ship, actually, the way the clips are synced to the lyrics.
And then the second verse is Delenn Kicking Ass. (I suspect that this verse is the only reason I kept this vid.) It's all Delenn arguing with the Grey Council, eventually with transparent space battle behind, and then she breaks the staff.
Anyway, regardless of what the vidder intended, it's a space-battle heavy vid. So in that sense it counts as an action vid. Some of the action is well-timed, even. I suspect that if I weren't so confused about this vid, I wouldn't like it, since the syncing isn't tremendously well done. But as it is -- well. I'm just confused. *g* If anyone else takes a look, I'd be curious as to what you think is going on.

Bonus vid: Charles's X-Files and Smallville vid 'S-Files' to 'Menouthis' by E.S. Posthumus.
This is not a traditional songvid. I include it here mostly because it amuses me, but the first half of it is an action vid, more or less, and the second half is... the X-Files credits redone. It's a short vid, only 1:54. The concept is something between a teaser trailer and the pre-credit teaser for a Smallville and X-Files crossover -- the bit before the credits is more of a trailer type thing, and then Charles replaced all the mystery-footage from the credits with stuff from Smallville. And the bit before the credits is cut to look like Mulder and Scully and Dogget and Reyes all going out to investigate stuff in Smallville. With partial voice-over from Mulder, even. And Dogget talking. And Clark bursting out of the furnace behind Mulder. And it's a ton of fun, if you're into crossovers at all. The credit portion is just -- wheee! Because a crossover works so well!
Available at Smallville Excape. No password. .wmv only. Charles has a bunch of other vids up, which I've never seen so can't comment on.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know of any vids based on other fannish things? Fanvids of fanfic, sorta thing? I know of two, shalott's "Seduction of the Desert Prince" (HL) and Bonibaru's "Sleep While You Drive" (SV), both based on stories. Anyone know any others? *ponders* I think there's one in Pros, but I can't remember anything about it, so that is completely unhelpful.
