Today, on out of context theater: Captain Kirk

I recently watched Star Trek TOS 1x25, "This Side of Paradise," aka "the one with the alien sex pollen." Spoilers ahoy

So, Spock is sneezed on by the alien sex pollen! Oh noes! He starts to do silly things like make out with women, and ignore his captain!

Just look at that -- he's mouthing off and being insubordinate! How dare he. (Also, "you don't think so what?" "I don't think so sir" makes me fall down with laughter every time.)

Everybody is running off and having cuddles-standing-in-for-sex. They've all left the Enterprise! They're just making out! And then Kirk is like, "why is Spock paying attention to that girl instead of me? I need to get his attention." And suddenly, Kirk has a plan! It is a good plan, but it has some dangers:

Srsly. Vulcan of steel, human of kleenex.

Hee. it's so funny because when I was really obsessed with these episodes, I was much younger, and the ... umm ... implications didn't occur to me. It's only looking back that I go - what?

Hee, me too! I remember the episode plots, but I notice different things in them now. :)

I honestly don't know if shows today could get away with this stuff. "Aroused, his physical strength could kill"?! Oh, Kirk, you're so getting off on that thought. Probably on a nightly basis.

I'm crossing my fingers so hard that the new movies will dare to go these places to this degree, but I'm not counting on it.
