Random fannish things!

When [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings and I were watching a recent Smallville vid, that I billed to her as "awesome but kind of weird because I don't recognize half the clips in it," I pointed to a scene where Lex and Clark were on either side of a stained glass door panel. "Look! Separated by stained glass!" "Ah-ha," said [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings, "on Smallville, slash is what happens when you take away the stained glass."* Then we agreed that this was a perfect description of the way the show works: just plain glass isn't enough. Then you can see what's on the other side!

(See, we're collecting Separated By Glass moments. These include, among others, the fabulous ice-wall in X2, and various people in hazmat suits, and things like that, but I also want to include Daniel in "Meridian." Because I think that Daniel/Death is really the SG1 OTP.** Daniel is separated from his death by glass! Daniel breaks through the glass trying to reach his desires! Daniel gazes longingly at ascension! He and ascension totally pass the broccoli test!)

Speaking of people who pass the broccoli test, we also watched a Once a Thief vid ("When I'm Up," by Lynn, Jill, and Kay, available here and determined that Vic and Mac have demonstrated on multiple occasions that they pass the broccoli test, but only when the broccoli is a gun. Or possibly a large knife, or a chainsaw.

Also, that vid made us want to go back and watch Once a Thief again, because seriously: trampoline fights. Chainsaw fencing. Stuck-on-top-of-a-just-married-car. Fighting with clowns. Moonwalking! Pop-up windows like we're in a VH1 music video! Two different endings to the series! Why Once a Thief is not in multi vids all the time for the hilarious visuals I don't know.

ALSO also, we were discussing what urban legends in Pegasus must be like. "Then he was passing by the gate, and three stones came through: tap, tap, tap" etc. And I said, okay, but the problem with an urban legends challenge is that there'll be a lot of stuff that's basically a direct translation of an urban legend into Pegasus. "Like," I said, "there's a serial killer in the backseat of the puddlejumper!" *pause* "It was John."

***
* This is also true of John Sheppard. For example, the stained glass door to the gym closing on John in "Hot Zone" -- Atlantis and the Ancients say "no, John, you can't have that, and you can't even see it." Just saying.

** Also, John/pain is totally the SGA OTP. And unlike other OTPs? This one is acknowledged by the camera and the writing all the time! (See [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings's proof in her vid here.)

Okay, y'all have got to watch Homicide, because the scenes in the Box! With the one way glass/mirror! And the scene in Colors when Pembleton is interrogating Bayliss' cousin and Bayliss gets so angry he pounds on the glass until it breaks!

I have no idea what the broccoli test is, but if you're looking for Separated By Glass moments, you can't get any better than Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Assuming I understand you correctly.

Also, Kirk and Spock are separated by glass in the episode Mirror, Mirror - Evil!Kirk is thrown into some kind of stockade with glass walls.

Oh, oh - Starsky & Hutch - Starsky looks at Hutch through quarantine glass in The Plague, and Hutch looks at Starsky through a hospital window in Sweet Revenge.

And - X-Files movie. Mulder looks at Sculy when she's in that Snow-Whitish glass coffin-y thing with the not-at-all-phallic tube down her mouth.

I don't know how far and wide you want to roam, but there's a pretty hilarious one in the Remington Steele episode Dreams of Steele.

That's the proto separated by glass moment that I firmly believe all the others reference :)

Are you only collecting slashy Separated By Glass moments? Because I, being easily suggestible, read this and immediately thought of other (sometimes more complex) variations. Superman Returns gave us Superman/[Lois/Richard]. Bones S1 gave us each of the central cast/their loved ones/the rest of the central cast watching the reunion-through-glass. Joss, being Joss, gave us Buffy/Spike through a solid wall and both Mal/River and Simon/River through space suits, plus Jayne/Mal through the pane in the airlock for added measure. Weeds S1 gave us Nancy/Judah across time and death through the glass of the television screen. I'm pretty sure X-Files gave us a bucketload of Mulder/Scully through glass that's too far back in high school for me to remember. Batman gave us Batman/every villain ever locked in Arkham. BSG did it a bunch of times through ship windshields -- I can't even recall who-all got that treatment, the list is so long. There's Lecter/Clarice, oh boy is there ever. I saw a vid with Ten/Rose through both a literal and a dimensional wall the other day. And ... okay, pretty clearly I could keep going, so I'm going to stop for now.

However, I now really want to know moments where the glass is brought down or crossed, because I'm really, really intrigued about the "through the looking glass" potential when a character actually does manage to cross -- whether or not there's usually a narrative of transformation that follows.

Hey. The windows he breaks through in Quarantine are both stained glass, aren't they?

You are such a nerd. I love you so much.

Invitations going out this week, finally!

Daniel/Death is totally the OTP.

Ok, I found a great glass moment for you! The final episode of Primeval (2x07) has a great separated by glass scene at the end between the two main male characters. (I don't know if you watch that show?) Also, Martha & the Doctor in "42" (although that's not slash).

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2008-03-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Also, there's got to be a ton of scenes in Oz.

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Primeval is sort of like Torchwood but with dinosaurs instead of aliens. The premise is that time portals are spontaneously opening all over the UK and creatures from the past are getting through into our present. (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808096/)) It can be a little silly, but I've really enjoyed it. If you want to give it a try, there's only 14 episodes (split into 2 short seasons). Anyway, the finale had a perfect Glass Moment (which I can upload the scene I'm talking about if you'd like to see it.)

Jack/Doctor scene in the end of ... Sound of Drums?
Yes! "Utopia" (3x11)! I love that scene!

[identity profile] thingswithwings.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
psssst! hi! I really am making a vid along these lines ([livejournal.com profile] eruthros and I have been brainstorming across-the-glass moments for some time, and I can no longer resist) and I was hoping that you would be kind enough to upload that episode or that scene for me to have a look at. I was going to download it from Awesome Download Community, but the link for 2x07 is broken.

thank you in advance! I hope I'm not being rude, jumping in on your comment thread here.

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh good, I'm glad you're actually making it! I think this is a fabulous idea. :)

Here is the scene I was talking about. (http://fannish-flux.com/primeval-glass.wmv) (right-click, 12MB)

If you think you'd like to use it, I can upload the nicer full episode AVI for you. I was thinking, the scene in Battlestar Galactica ep 1x08(?) "Flesh & Bone" of Starbuck & Leoben touching through the glass airlock might be good too, if you hadn't already thought of it.

[identity profile] thingswithwings.livejournal.com 2008-03-31 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, it's been a vid idea of mine for a long time now - and now that I'm doing some vidding, it's the one that's foremost in my mind.

that scene is fabulous - and horrifying! I think I will have to actually watch this show, from the beginning - Torchwood with dinosaurs sounds pretty awesome. It's too bad that it's cut back and forth the way that it is, but I bet I can make it work. thank you so much! Whenever you have time to do the upload, I'd love to have the whole episode.

I was totally thinking of that Starbuck/Leoben airlock moment! :) Such a fabulous scene. It's on my (ever-expanding) list.

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2008-04-05 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I sent you an email. If I think of any more scenes, do you want me to shoot them your way? Or are you pretty full up?

[identity profile] thingswithwings.livejournal.com 2008-04-06 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
well, I'm pretty full up in that I have lots and lots of awesome scenes to use (plus, I'm using a fairly short piece of music), so I'm not hard up, but you can absolutely shoot any other scenes my way, if you think of good ones. Especially femslash scenes - right now I've just got Faith/Buffy (Bad Girls, window), Teyla/Elizabeth (Adrift, hazmat suit), and Xena/Gabrielle (Bitter Suite, reaching through the wall of water). I'd love for the ladies to be more represented, you know? I've got over a dozen m/m pairings.

thanks again!

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I just thought of a couple good f/f ones! I don't know if you watch Alias, but the characters Sydney & Anna (played by Gina Torres) are enemies and VERY slashy. In 2 separate episodes they're chasing eachother and one shuts a glass door in the other's face--they stare at eachother through it & then one kisses the window mockingly. First Anna does it to Sydney , and then in a later episodes Sydney does the same thing to Anna. I'm at work right now, so I'll have to look up the episode names later.

Another f/f scene, although I wouldn't call it slash because it's mother/daughter, is between Syndey & her mother. Her mother is locked in a cell with a large glass wall, and they have scenes through it. In one scene Sydney even does the hand pressed to glass thing.

If you want more m/f scenes, there are several between Sydney & Sark (played by David Anders) when he's kept in the same cell. Also between Sydney & a character named Will--again the cell. I also remember a time when her father is in prison & they talk through a visitor's window.

Edited to add:
I know you said you have enough m/m, but there's also Charlie & Desmond from Lost.

(Sorry to keep spamming you with comments this morning)

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
In episode 2 of Torchwood, Gwen visits a female character in their holding cell, which is a glass wall. I don't have the episode in front of me, so I don't know if there's anything good to use from it. But I believe they do talk through the glass. (Eventually Gwen ends up in the cell with her making out...it's a pheromone thing.)

[identity profile] thingswithwings.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
welllll, being helpful is probably not the same as spamming, so I'll give you a pass this time. Your suggestion may have merit, but that scene grosses me out so much (women who aren't lesbians make out while men watch them and get turned on! yay!) that I can't bear to do it. Plus I'm more into glass scenes that are about . . . y'know, longing, which those two don't have. Plus, ew, Gwen. I can't do it, dude.

Re: (Sorry to keep spamming you with comments this morning)

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Gwen, but I totally agree about the ickiness of the scene. I just thought I'd bring it up just for the hell of it, if you were desperate for *any* f/f scenes.

Other thoughts:
1. Niki/Jessica (Heroes) & all the mirror glass between them?
2. I'm pretty sure there's a scene in Due South where Fraser & RayK are on opposite sides of a one-way mirror, and they come close to the glass & look at eachother...although I don't know how "longing" it is.

[identity profile] thingswithwings.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm, the Sydney/Anna sounds interesting (Gina Torres? Really? I'm in!) - it might be the wrong tone for the vid, but I'd love to see it anyway; let me know what the episode titles are, and I'll download it from TV Downloads Community. Actually, I found one in BSG the other day that's a perfect f/f, so I'm super excited about that. I'm not doing m/f scenes in the vid, though.

And have no fear - Charlie and Desmond have always been on my list. :) I actually just clipped that last week; so slashy and wonderful! Though I still can't quite figure out why Charlie doesn't just get to the other side of the door before he closes it. Uh. Whatever! It's a good scene.

[identity profile] sol-se.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Sydney/Anna could also be reminiscent of Buffy/Faith. I should be able to get to my Alias DVDs soon, so I'll let you know the eps.

Though I still can't quite figure out why Charlie doesn't just get to the other side of the door before he closes it.

I KNOW!!!

sweet! I can't wait to see them, thank you.

and, uh . . . maybe you could email me with them? epistemophilia at gmail. Just so we're not clogging up [livejournal.com profile] eruthros's lj QUITE so much.
