Random fannish things!
When
thingswithwings and I were watching a recent Smallville vid, that I billed to her as "awesome but kind of weird because I don't recognize half the clips in it," I pointed to a scene where Lex and Clark were on either side of a stained glass door panel. "Look! Separated by stained glass!" "Ah-ha," said
thingswithwings, "on Smallville, slash is what happens when you take away the stained glass."* Then we agreed that this was a perfect description of the way the show works: just plain glass isn't enough. Then you can see what's on the other side!
(See, we're collecting Separated By Glass moments. These include, among others, the fabulous ice-wall in X2, and various people in hazmat suits, and things like that, but I also want to include Daniel in "Meridian." Because I think that Daniel/Death is really the SG1 OTP.** Daniel is separated from his death by glass! Daniel breaks through the glass trying to reach his desires! Daniel gazes longingly at ascension! He and ascension totally pass the broccoli test!)
Speaking of people who pass the broccoli test, we also watched a Once a Thief vid ("When I'm Up," by Lynn, Jill, and Kay, available here and determined that Vic and Mac have demonstrated on multiple occasions that they pass the broccoli test, but only when the broccoli is a gun. Or possibly a large knife, or a chainsaw.
Also, that vid made us want to go back and watch Once a Thief again, because seriously: trampoline fights. Chainsaw fencing. Stuck-on-top-of-a-just-married-car. Fighting with clowns. Moonwalking! Pop-up windows like we're in a VH1 music video! Two different endings to the series! Why Once a Thief is not in multi vids all the time for the hilarious visuals I don't know.
ALSO also, we were discussing what urban legends in Pegasus must be like. "Then he was passing by the gate, and three stones came through: tap, tap, tap" etc. And I said, okay, but the problem with an urban legends challenge is that there'll be a lot of stuff that's basically a direct translation of an urban legend into Pegasus. "Like," I said, "there's a serial killer in the backseat of the puddlejumper!" *pause* "It was John."
***
* This is also true of John Sheppard. For example, the stained glass door to the gym closing on John in "Hot Zone" -- Atlantis and the Ancients say "no, John, you can't have that, and you can't even see it." Just saying.
** Also, John/pain is totally the SGA OTP. And unlike other OTPs? This one is acknowledged by the camera and the writing all the time! (See
thingswithwings's proof in her vid here.)

The broccoli test is a very important concept in fandom! It describes the psychicness of various pairings -- you can read more here.

Oh, oh - Starsky & Hutch - Starsky looks at Hutch through quarantine glass in The Plague, and Hutch looks at Starsky through a hospital window in Sweet Revenge.
And - X-Files movie. Mulder looks at Sculy when she's in that Snow-Whitish glass coffin-y thing with the not-at-all-phallic tube down her mouth.

I had forgotten the X-Files movie, though, because ... of blocking out most of the X-Files as too traumatic. :) Neat!

However, I now really want to know moments where the glass is brought down or crossed, because I'm really, really intrigued about the "through the looking glass" potential when a character actually does manage to cross -- whether or not there's usually a narrative of transformation that follows.

I think the watching-the-reunion through glass is also a great example of the moment of longing and isolation! And so is the tv screen, which I also hadn't thought of -- there are examples of people separated by the TV screen and death in Buffy, too. (Oh, Faith!)
The wall and the tv screen and all of that is a demonstration that scifi's pretty good at this sort of metaphor, really!

Hey. The windows he breaks through in Quarantine are both stained glass, aren't they?

Ok, I found a great glass moment for you! The final episode of Primeval (2x07) has a great separated by glass scene at the end between the two main male characters. (I don't know if you watch that show?) Also, Martha & the Doctor in "42" (although that's not slash).

I have never seen Primeval! What's it about?
Alsoalso, there's the awesome Jack/Doctor scene in the end of ... Sound of Drums? Whichever season three ep involves Jack taking off his jacket and fixing nuclear thingies.

Yes! "Utopia" (3x11)! I love that scene!

thank you in advance! I hope I'm not being rude, jumping in on your comment thread here.

Here is the scene I was talking about. (http://fannish-flux.com/primeval-glass.wmv) (right-click, 12MB)
If you think you'd like to use it, I can upload the nicer full episode AVI for you. I was thinking, the scene in Battlestar Galactica ep 1x08(?) "Flesh & Bone" of Starbuck & Leoben touching through the glass airlock might be good too, if you hadn't already thought of it.

that scene is fabulous - and horrifying! I think I will have to actually watch this show, from the beginning - Torchwood with dinosaurs sounds pretty awesome. It's too bad that it's cut back and forth the way that it is, but I bet I can make it work. thank you so much! Whenever you have time to do the upload, I'd love to have the whole episode.
I was totally thinking of that Starbuck/Leoben airlock moment! :) Such a fabulous scene. It's on my (ever-expanding) list.

Another f/f scene, although I wouldn't call it slash because it's mother/daughter, is between Syndey & her mother. Her mother is locked in a cell with a large glass wall, and they have scenes through it. In one scene Sydney even does the hand pressed to glass thing.
If you want more m/f scenes, there are several between Sydney & Sark (played by David Anders) when he's kept in the same cell. Also between Sydney & a character named Will--again the cell. I also remember a time when her father is in prison & they talk through a visitor's window.
Edited to add:
I know you said you have enough m/m, but there's also Charlie & Desmond from Lost.
(Sorry to keep spamming you with comments this morning)

1. Niki/Jessica (Heroes) & all the mirror glass between them?
2. I'm pretty sure there's a scene in Due South where Fraser & RayK are on opposite sides of a one-way mirror, and they come close to the glass & look at eachother...although I don't know how "longing" it is.

And have no fear - Charlie and Desmond have always been on my list. :) I actually just clipped that last week; so slashy and wonderful! Though I still can't quite figure out why Charlie doesn't just get to the other side of the door before he closes it. Uh. Whatever! It's a good scene.
