Punishment from god. Why do you think it's occurence was higher in the Native American (i.e. Heathen!) population. And of course you can't get it from husbands. They are all celibate until marriage. And as we know, providing protection from STDs GUARANTEES (Note: not an actual guarantee) sexual promiscuity. Just look at me! Condoms everywhere, and I was philandering about with literally (read: made up) thousands of women.
