... *facepalm*:
People often accidentally give out my real name email address thinking it's theirs, so I get things like other people's bank statements and other people's medical records reminders and whatever. But recently someone used my email in a way that seriously topped that: someone with my initials is getting married.

And they must've put my email address on the invitations.

I know this because in the last two days I have received emails from five people rsvping to said wedding, often with effuse comments and details about their kids and whatever. So far I have politely emailed everyone back all "hi you have the wrong email address," but I foresee great naaarghs in the future.

... omg I no longer have the skills for this:
Yesterday I spilled a little bit of water on my touchpad and it somehow broke the touchpad buttons. Good: the computer is still under warranty, including warranty for "shit you accidentally break." Bad: I have to wait until at least tomorrow for the parts. And I'm really out of the keyboard-shortcuts habit.

... symptoms that make me cranky:
Why are my limbs so heavy and trembly why. I hate summer. (I thought this was some new symptom before I looked at my symptom diary, but as it turns out I had it two summers ago, and possibly last summer, so I have now decided to blame heat and/or humidity instead. Especially since so far it's been worst on the hottest days. Blargh.)

... our Voyager rewatch:
I find Admiral Paris very disconcerting every time he shows up on Voyager. And I just realized why: he played Admiral Noyce on Seaquest DSV, which is basically Star Trek underwater (and which has a theme song very similar to Voyager's). They are sort of the same character! On very similar shows! But with different uniforms. No wonder I find it distracting and weird.

... adorability:
I went to the dog park with t'wings and Rorschach today, where Rorschach decided to try to make friends with a frog. (I turned the video recorder in my phone on, so that links to t'wing's post with embedded video.) Sadly I didn't pull out my phone in time to get him doing his doggy play bow at the frog small very hoppy dog, or to get most of him doing his poke-poke-play-with-me thing, but let me just say it was completely adorable. And ridiculous. He totally did the same super-exaggerated play bow he does with cats small purring fluffy dogs, where he wants to make it really clear that he is asking to play, because for SOME REASON they sometimes don't realize that he's not planning on eating them. (Usually the cats then box his ears and he goes "oh gosh, they DO want to play! come on, [personal profile] eruthros, let's go wrestle with them!" And I go "um, no." The frog just sat there, mostly, and hopped desultorily every fifth or sixth time Rorschach poked it.)
eruthros: Li Ann from Once a Thief with two guns, text "Li Ann" (OaT - Li Ann red)
1. OMG, guys, Alliance finally released Once a Thief on DVD (not yet on amazon.com, but it's on amazon.ca). It's a show of my fannish youth (listen, Krycek was on it, okay), and most of it has never been available on DVD at all. I plan to buy it get it from netflix and revel in the evil clowns and the fight scene on trampolines and that time people fenced with chainsaws and the general John Woo-ishness of it. *points up at icon of Li Ann with two guns* Look she jumps sideways out from behind pallets of stuff to fire two guns at evil clowns. How can I not like that!

Also, if any of y'all know of any good Li Ann/the Director fic, plz send it thisaway. Or the Director/Mac d/s fic would also be welcomed.

2. I really hate having conversations with people who assume that if I don't like something, it must be because I don't get it, and if they just explain then eventually I'll go "oh gosh, you know, my visceral negative reaction and/or my political objections have now totally vanished! I'll go and draw sparkly hearts around it now!"

I mean, obviously people like different things than I do for a variety of reasons, and obviously people can disagree with me about whether something is problematic. But, oh my god, if I could stop talking to people who assume that it's because I just didn't understand the underlying message and if I understood everyone's intent then I would just love it and and and...

3. I have had no success googling this and my physical therapist is an asshole, so I turn to you, the internet! One strange thing that has started happening to me lately is this: I lean over forward to reach the ground, with my knees bent slightly, and I spend some time that way, pulling weeds or picking stuff up off the floor, and within a minute or two my legs go immediately and critically wobbly. And then if I stand up, which is always really difficult, my legs are weak and shaky, and it can last for hours. Hours in which I basically can't stand and have to lever myself up out of chairs and use my cane or hold onto things because I'm dangerously unsupported.

I asked my PT a while ago if this was a particularly weak or stressed muscle somewhere I should be working on or if it was some other kind of problem and she was like "whatever, people's bodies change sometimes, keep doing your core strengthening exercises." But it feels like somewhat more of a problem than that! Especially because it's newish in the last year and because I've been doing those exercises and incidentally my core strength is fine and because my knees are already hypermobile so with the added instability I really do have problems walking and standing. But I know nothing about soft-tissue structures, so: does anybody know what the hell is going wrong there?

4. Man, sometimes I want to make the "take JMS's heavy-handedness out" cut of Babylon 5. Like, every time he does a scene twice, to make sure we get the emotions of it (*cough* finale *cough*)? Take out one of the scenes. Every time there's that extra scene at the end of an episode even though the emotional resolution clearly happened with (usually) G'Kar's or (sometimes) Londo or Delenn's amazing and brilliant scene? Take it out. I don't need to see the captain reflecting on G'Kar or Londo or Delenn or whoever's amazing plot in order to get it, guys, I don't need jms's stand-in to tell me how to feel, because, you know, other people are having amazing scenes and acting brilliantly in them? And I feel things for them?

I mean, we just watched "Passing Through Gethsemane," which - spoiler-free version! - involves the same character explaining the story of Gethsemane twice. To make sure we get the metaphor. It's relevant to his life situation, guys! FYI! And it's already the title, jms, so you seriously don't need one of those two scenes.

I love the show in a lot of ways, but geez.

Bad news:

I just made a cup of herbal tea, and about three seconds after I poured the water out of the kettle I stumbled a little, and sloshed just-off-boiling water onto half of my hand.

Good news:

It was the hand with more parasthesia, which means that the water sloshed on the fingers where I (almost) can't feel heat or cold at all. So I didn't do the autonomic response to pain thing, which is good, because that probably would have involved letting go of the mug and spilling more just-off-boiling water everywhere. (And not incidentally staining everything with hibiscus.)

Bad news:

Uh, it turns out it's hard to hold your hand under cool running water for ten minutes when you can't tell how warm the water is and your cold water is ice cold and your hot water heater is finicky. I kept having to stick my other wrist in to go, oh, damn, now we're doing warm water.

1. Watched Mythbusters! New episodes just started airing last night. All I have to say about it is spoiler cut )

2. Made cheesecake brownies! Just sort of spontaneously. [personal profile] happydork linked to this recipe for cheesecake brownies, and I looked at it and went, wait, I can do all of those steps! So I went out and bought cream cheese and then made a recipe.

3. Installed some non-VLC media players, because VLC started being so slow and buggy and building-font-library-y. I've tried KMPlayer and SMPlayer; of the two, I like the KMPlayer better, although I hate its icons. I'm still shopping around, though, if you have other suggestions.

4. Rewashed all of my fall and winter clothes. No, really, all of them. allergies are no fun )

5. Gotten excited about knitting again! I used to mostly knit projects on small needles -- fingering or lace weight socks and lace scarves and things -- and now holding those needles hurts too much and it made me cranky that I had all this stash yarn for socks that I wouldn't be using (or, at least, not for socks). So I haven't knit in a year or so, but when [personal profile] anatsuno was here we were talking about knitting, and I remembered I had a worsted-weight sweater to knit, so now I'm in the middle of that. (I <3 alpaca.) And I'm doing a worsted lace scarf, too. And I realized I had some super bulky local yarn that I bought when one of the sheeps-milk people decided to stop making yarn and sold it all off super cheap, and my old slippers are falling apart, so perhaps I will felt up some slippers. I'm all: knitting in front of the tv! This is a thing I used to do! Right! Only now I have to get new needles for basically every project, because I have a ton of 0-3s, but like one pair of size 9 needles.

6. Speaking of TV, I also watched the first few Criminal Minds episodes from this season. spoiler cut )
eruthros: llamas! (llamas)
Massively dry, sore throat. (Partly the fault of meds, partly the fault of taking a hike today that I took someone's word about in terms of the "oh, stairs at the start, then mostly flat" which btw my knees do not thank that trail reviewer, partly the fault of it being fucking hot here.)

I have: drunk a lot of water (see above re: hot), eaten like five chocolate chips (all the chocolate in the house except for some pocky), had some fruit juice and vegetables and dinner and things, had some ice cream (listen, it could have worked), made myself some tea with honey, and it still feels like someone could light a match on the back of my throat. Given that I have the pantry of a moderately-foodie USAmerican vegetarian, the tea stock of a person who really likes tea, the medicine cabinet of a person who basically can't take otc medication, and the knees of a person who is not walking another step outside the house today, do you have any suggestions? It's ridiculously distracting. And also, owww.
eruthros: llamas! (llamas)
1. Why has it been fifty-five degrees (13* C) out and raining for most of the last week?

I turned the heat off at least a month ago, but it keeps getting down to the low forties at night and then only hitting 55 or so during the day, so the house is pretty chilly. To the point that I'm wearing my winter socks and fleece and drinking hot tea. And whining. Brrrrr. But listen, June, even if you've decided to be spring instead of summer, I'm not turning the heat back on. (I did, however, make cookies to heat up the place.)

Also, the first tomatoes were looking nearly-done a week ago, but because of the cool weather I've had no tasty tomatoes -- the tomato plants are going "what is this?" Instead I've had to weed a lot, which is much less fun.

Plus the probably-upstairs-neighbors who have been pretending to "compost" dumped more "compost" in the yard, so I gave up on polite and sicced the property management company on them. Gratifyingly, the person who took my call was like "how many times has it happened? what, seriously?"

2. I wish dreamwidth had a jabber/xmpp service. I have made many new friends here, but finding everyone's gtalk or lj talk names and adding them in manually is a pain in the ass, and also requires that I remember to do it.

3. In a week or so I have an appointment with a physiatrist (me to doctor on getting this referral: oh come on, now you're just making doctors up!) who is supposed to consult regarding hand orthotics and PT. Which is really exciting! Especially because I've been waiting to see hir for like four months. And maybe I'll get something better or more useful than my current tape-knuckles-as-they-act-up approach, which a) requires waiting until they've acted up and b) involves a lot of tape.

4. I am always amused when I'm icing something and heating something else. (Currently, heating the neck, icing the wrist.)

5. When I came home today, a dude biked up the driveway to follow me to the door of my apartment -- which is set back from the street -- and said "do you live here?" And when I just sort of blinked, he said "hey, what's your name? what do you do?" To which I said "I don't have time to talk right now" and shut and locked the door behind me. (Actually I said I was sorry first, because I never do manage not to apologize.) But, just, what a great illustration of the ways in which people demand information from people with less power/privelege sometimes, and the way in which that's creepy. And I bet if I'd tried to call him on it, he would've done the "I was just trying to be friendly and make conversation!" NARGH. As if being followed to my door isn't a potentially-threatening intrusion into my space.

I was linked to an essay on this somewhere -- though of course I can't find it now -- that talked about how the kinds of "small talk" that are common in public space translate to "give me information that will allow me to track you down." (ETA: found by [personal profile] livrelibre! It's [personal profile] brigid's post men and women in public spaces.)

6. Mythbusters! I have been watching it! Last week's episode -- Fireball Stun Gun -- was massively meta, because Mythbusters spoilers )

7. Doctor Who! I am incredibly behind on it. *facepalm* I just now watched The Hungry Earth, and I should probably watch the rest of the two-parter, but meh. I think I will watch some Avatar instead.

1. Here is a thing I wish blogs would agree on: what "previous" and "next" mean. On some blogs, previous entries points to older posts; on some, it points to more recent posts. Having to hover over links to figure out where they go makes me cranky.

2. Dear the internet, I am looking for a film called A Private Function. (1985, starring Maggie Smith and Michael Palin, in case there are several by that name.) It is not available on Netflix, or from my library, or from any of the usual places, and costs like $60 used on amazon or ebay. Does anybody have access to a copy? Your own or a library's or a better video store? ETA: I think I've tracked it down at a library, thanks!

3. I have this problem where I have physical therapists, but they're all about "getting better," not about what would make daily routines easier. So I have some things that I need, but I don't know where to shop for them -- are there good assistive devices shops that you like? Where should I buy a folding cane? If I want to get those foam things that go over the handles of knives so I don't have to grip so tightly, what are they even called and where can I buy them? That sort of thing. And instead my PTs say things like "oh, well, but maybe you won't need it for long..." and "why don't we wait and see if you get better first..." and "well, but you can work around it for now, right?" I find this very frustrating. Especially since "getting better" is so far the work of years. And thus I ask you, the internet, instead.

4. I am not going to talk a lot about episode 8x03 of Mythbusters, except to say: JAAAAAAAAMIE!!!! Omg he was adorable. And arrogant, which somehow makes him even more adorable, I don't even know. And Adam loves it. Also, I <3 Grant, because he is awesome. And Kari -- I'm so glad she's back.

1. I received my very first good brace in the mail yesterday -- unlike the ones I get from my doctor, this one actually fits and is lined with smooth fabric. It is like nine times more comfortable than the brace I was wearing this time yesterday. Also, it looks much more hacker!brace and much less like why-is-this-a-hideous-medical-blue? And then I slept in it and only woke up once.

2. I watched an episode of Spartacus and, listen, I just can't do it guys. I don't care how much Lucy Lawless makes out with chicks in it, I can't do it. If there are particularly kinky bits that I really ought to clip, I'd appreciate an "episode four, about halfway through" or something, because otherwise it's not happening.

Also, the blood is so amazingly fake that I kept thinking it was pomegranate juice. Or maybe cranberry. "Spartacus: Pomegranate Juice and Sand" doesn't have nearly the ring to it, though.

3. We had a minor SNOWPOCALYPSE here, and reacted as one should to all snowpocalypses: we went outside half an hour before the sun set and made a snowperson. And then, because we are a [personal profile] thingswithwings and a [personal profile] eruthros, we started to make another snowperson, and in fact a whole snowscene, and then it got dark so we had to come inside before we finished. But I'm sure that they will be completed tomorrow!

4. When I play in the snow, I consider hot chocolate to be my just reward. So! There was hot chocolate! And it was tasty.

All in all, a very satisfactory day!
eruthros: Delenn from Babylon 5 with a startled expression and the text "omg!" (BtVS cheeseman nonsense)
Guess who woke up this morning with new symptoms? And then called an advice nurse and then went in to see a doctor at the clinic? And now has a brand-new bigger!stronger!better!more hideous! hand and wrist brace? And more different and exciting medication that has to be carefully slotted into the schedule?

OH YES THAT WOULD BE ME.

*facepalm*

I was planning on writing some of my yuletide story with that afternoon. (And also with that HAND. Immobilization sucks.)

I can still do it! I have an idea and a structure and some scenes and many words! I have two more days! I just need to figure out how to best type with this brace.

ETA: I forgot to mention that my new brace is produced by a company called "Freedom Splints." Srsly.
