some things I have done recently

1. Watched Mythbusters! New episodes just started airing last night. All I have to say about it is that the Mythbusters + dogs is like the most adorable thing ever. Oh my heavens, when Jamie calls the bloodhound good boy! And pets him! And when a puppy sits on the table during the set up scene so the build team can pet it! And when all the sniffer dogs sit down and wag their tails and look expectant because they know they've done well, and when Kari brings her dogs in, AWWWW. Also they tested some myths I guess?
Mostly I spent the episode going "puppies!" "ooh, Grant's hair is really great in this episode!" "oh more puppies!" "ha, Adam's dressed as a sheriff! and Jamie as a prisoner! role reversal!" "oh man that puppy is the best puppy" "no wait that puppy is the best puppy." (Twings and I talked a lot about dogs today before we watched the episode, without knowing what the episode was about, so I was primed for wanting to scritch all the dogs behind their ears.)
2. Made cheesecake brownies! Just sort of spontaneously.
happydork linked to this recipe for cheesecake brownies, and I looked at it and went, wait, I can do all of those steps! So I went out and bought cream cheese and then made a recipe.
3. Installed some non-VLC media players, because VLC started being so slow and buggy and building-font-library-y. I've tried KMPlayer and SMPlayer; of the two, I like the KMPlayer better, although I hate its icons. I'm still shopping around, though, if you have other suggestions.
4. Rewashed all of my fall and winter clothes. No, really, all of them. Because I have skin allergies, and last winter I was using a laundry soap that I started to react to, and then I tried a different laundry soap that was even worse, and then I gave up on even green-earth-friendly laundry soap and switched to my local organic no-additives castile soap, which so far has worked out thank god.
Only I forgot this change until it was chilly recently, and I pulled out a favorite pair of jeans all "jeans! how good to see you again!" and then my skin itched and itched and itched, and I was like "jeans, what is wrong with you?" And then the next day was even colder, so I tried a different pair of jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, and then I was like "gosh, am I getting a fever?" and then a few hours later I realized my skin had gone all bright red and hot and unhappy and was starting to blister. Thanks, fall clothes. Fuck off, strip washing, I should not need to wash my own clothes three times.
5. Gotten excited about knitting again! I used to mostly knit projects on small needles -- fingering or lace weight socks and lace scarves and things -- and now holding those needles hurts too much and it made me cranky that I had all this stash yarn for socks that I wouldn't be using (or, at least, not for socks). So I haven't knit in a year or so, but when
anatsuno was here we were talking about knitting, and I remembered I had a worsted-weight sweater to knit, so now I'm in the middle of that. (I <3 alpaca.) And I'm doing a worsted lace scarf, too. And I realized I had some super bulky local yarn that I bought when one of the sheeps-milk people decided to stop making yarn and sold it all off super cheap, and my old slippers are falling apart, so perhaps I will felt up some slippers. I'm all: knitting in front of the tv! This is a thing I used to do! Right! Only now I have to get new needles for basically every project, because I have a ton of 0-3s, but like one pair of size 9 needles.
6. Speaking of TV, I also watched the first few Criminal Minds episodes from this season. I kind of couldn't believe last season that they actually were going to get rid of JJ, but indeed there she went, not even to be replaced by anybody. Gee, I guess they didn't need anybody to do that crucial job after all? I mean, earlier when she had maternity leave they got a replacement, but they might as well have let Hotch do it! He seems to think that's no problem!
Also, so far the episodes have not included nearly enough Morgan, Garcia, or Prentiss. I felt like I was willing to watch a few more episodes while knitting as long as I got to have Morgan and Garcia being sweet to each other, and Morgan saving the day, and Prentiss being awesome. But there hasn't been any of that, really. I do not care about killer-pov cam or Rossi's old cases, guys. Blech.

Date: 2010-10-08 06:31 pm (UTC)am very sorry to hear your yarn and needles are failing you, with the current needs
first thought: could you comfortable hold two strands of fingering at the same time? or, wind 'em into a ball first?
second thought: i have a stash of blunt tipped bamboo straights in large sizes. would be happy to ship 'em off to you, if they can be of help. at the moment, they provide silly/lovely decoration in a vase ~grin~

Date: 2010-10-10 05:38 pm (UTC)Thank you very much for the kind offer! I have to say, it's hard to turn knitting supplies down :) Have you recently switched to interchangeables or sharp-tips or something?

Date: 2010-10-10 06:39 pm (UTC)i've found that straights put too much pressure on my wrists when making long/large items. i've slowly gathered circulars in my sizes/lengths from generous folks
and yeah, the blunt tips (on any shape needle) now drive me batty when attempting cables w/o a cable needle and crazy lace decreases

Date: 2010-10-10 11:25 pm (UTC)I do like sharp tips, but I like wooden needles too, and it can be hard to find those two things together! And I'll usually take wooden over sharper points.
