eruthros: Kari from Mythbusters driving construction equipment (Mythbusters - Kari is awesome)
Guys, there is new Mythbusters! There have now been two whole episodes this season, and let me just say, 9x02 (or however we're numbering them now) is a ton of fun.

For my birthday this past weekend, I got the flu. Now I am achey and tired and cranky and fever-and-chills-y and hard-to-focus-y and I can't read fic and I screwed up the decreases in my knitting like twelve times yesterday because I couldn't count.

So I thought it was time to post a guessing-fannish-stuff meme!

Some months ago, [personal profile] aria posted a bunch of post secret-style secrets from the POV of various characters, and asked people to guess who wrote which secret. At the time I thought it was a great idea, and wanted to turn it into a meme (again), but then it took me a long time to make any secrets, and also to come up with secrets, and anyway I'm bad at getting around to posting things, so I just stuck them over in posts-to-maybe-make-someday. But today is clearly a good day for it!

Behind the cut: forty-some secrets by characters from twenty-some fandoms; includes text descriptions )

One NSFW secret is here, under a separate cut )

I'd love to play in your versions, too! )

ETA: There are two secrets left unguessed (counting the ones where someone made an awesome guess, but nobody guessed what I'd originally intended): #7 and 41. So I thought I'd narrow down the fandoms somewhat; the remaining ones come from: Stargate SG-1 and Nintendo video games.

(from Grant Imahara's twitter)

I saw it and immediately went YES PLEASE. I don't even care what specifically, just yes for any and all options. Grant playing the Doctor! Grant busting Doctor Who-related myths! Grand trick-or-treating as the Doctor! Grant going to comiccon as the Doctor! All of the above!

1. Watched Mythbusters! New episodes just started airing last night. All I have to say about it is spoiler cut )

2. Made cheesecake brownies! Just sort of spontaneously. [personal profile] happydork linked to this recipe for cheesecake brownies, and I looked at it and went, wait, I can do all of those steps! So I went out and bought cream cheese and then made a recipe.

3. Installed some non-VLC media players, because VLC started being so slow and buggy and building-font-library-y. I've tried KMPlayer and SMPlayer; of the two, I like the KMPlayer better, although I hate its icons. I'm still shopping around, though, if you have other suggestions.

4. Rewashed all of my fall and winter clothes. No, really, all of them. allergies are no fun )

5. Gotten excited about knitting again! I used to mostly knit projects on small needles -- fingering or lace weight socks and lace scarves and things -- and now holding those needles hurts too much and it made me cranky that I had all this stash yarn for socks that I wouldn't be using (or, at least, not for socks). So I haven't knit in a year or so, but when [personal profile] anatsuno was here we were talking about knitting, and I remembered I had a worsted-weight sweater to knit, so now I'm in the middle of that. (I <3 alpaca.) And I'm doing a worsted lace scarf, too. And I realized I had some super bulky local yarn that I bought when one of the sheeps-milk people decided to stop making yarn and sold it all off super cheap, and my old slippers are falling apart, so perhaps I will felt up some slippers. I'm all: knitting in front of the tv! This is a thing I used to do! Right! Only now I have to get new needles for basically every project, because I have a ton of 0-3s, but like one pair of size 9 needles.

6. Speaking of TV, I also watched the first few Criminal Minds episodes from this season. spoiler cut )

eruthros: Jamie and Adam from Mythbusters, drawn by Tardis80, text: "busted". (Mythbusters!)
Mythbusters episode 8x12: Car Conundrum? Yeah, don't bother, it's really a clip show. They put together three car related myths: Underwater Car, that one from the viral video episode about opening a car door with a tennis ball, and the chase scene myths involving fruit stands. So if you've seen those, you've seen the episode. Unless you miss Tory's facial hair or something.

And irritatingly, they never say "we're putting together three car myths that have previously aired" or anything.

I could be forgetting an episode, but I don't think they've ever done this before -- they've done "best of" episodes, but they marked them as specials and as repeats. And they've done things where they reexamine myths. But not, just, here are some previous myths, we haven't changed them at all, but we're airing it as if it's a regular episode.

1. Things I hate: power outages. Especially power outages that were the result of a huge storm with big threatening clouds that made it dark inside even at six pm yesterday. Especially since I could find candles, but not matches, which required me to use one of [personal profile] thingswithwings lighters. And lighters are hard! They involve far too much thumb strength and all the bits are too small -- and as usual it took like ten tries to every one that made a flame, and then several attempts to manage to hold candle + lighter in the right positions. As a consequence, I dripped hot candle wax on my fingers, which reminds me a) that context is important for erotic/not erotic pain, b) that owww, drops from an inch are too close even for white paraffin, and c) that I somehow always manage to blister the knuckles I need to tape in order to type of COURSE. And I ran my hand under water and everything, geez.

2. So last night's Mythbusters (possibly 8x11? they need to have episode numbers on this show) is called "Top 25 Mythbusters Moments," and so I went "ugh, clip show" and nearly didn't watch it. Then I did anyway, because I didn't have anything else to watch tonight, and as it turned out I was glad that I had! Because some spoilery things happened )

3. [personal profile] chagrined and I were talking about [community profile] death_bingo, and agreeing that it has a great premise, and then zie mentioned the possibility of deathfic postage stamps. And proposed one. So I chat-spitballed it, and have included it below the cut because zie asked me to. warning for character death, clowns, elephant dung, and zombies )

1. Why has it been fifty-five degrees (13* C) out and raining for most of the last week?

I turned the heat off at least a month ago, but it keeps getting down to the low forties at night and then only hitting 55 or so during the day, so the house is pretty chilly. To the point that I'm wearing my winter socks and fleece and drinking hot tea. And whining. Brrrrr. But listen, June, even if you've decided to be spring instead of summer, I'm not turning the heat back on. (I did, however, make cookies to heat up the place.)

Also, the first tomatoes were looking nearly-done a week ago, but because of the cool weather I've had no tasty tomatoes -- the tomato plants are going "what is this?" Instead I've had to weed a lot, which is much less fun.

Plus the probably-upstairs-neighbors who have been pretending to "compost" dumped more "compost" in the yard, so I gave up on polite and sicced the property management company on them. Gratifyingly, the person who took my call was like "how many times has it happened? what, seriously?"

2. I wish dreamwidth had a jabber/xmpp service. I have made many new friends here, but finding everyone's gtalk or lj talk names and adding them in manually is a pain in the ass, and also requires that I remember to do it.

3. In a week or so I have an appointment with a physiatrist (me to doctor on getting this referral: oh come on, now you're just making doctors up!) who is supposed to consult regarding hand orthotics and PT. Which is really exciting! Especially because I've been waiting to see hir for like four months. And maybe I'll get something better or more useful than my current tape-knuckles-as-they-act-up approach, which a) requires waiting until they've acted up and b) involves a lot of tape.

4. I am always amused when I'm icing something and heating something else. (Currently, heating the neck, icing the wrist.)

5. When I came home today, a dude biked up the driveway to follow me to the door of my apartment -- which is set back from the street -- and said "do you live here?" And when I just sort of blinked, he said "hey, what's your name? what do you do?" To which I said "I don't have time to talk right now" and shut and locked the door behind me. (Actually I said I was sorry first, because I never do manage not to apologize.) But, just, what a great illustration of the ways in which people demand information from people with less power/privelege sometimes, and the way in which that's creepy. And I bet if I'd tried to call him on it, he would've done the "I was just trying to be friendly and make conversation!" NARGH. As if being followed to my door isn't a potentially-threatening intrusion into my space.

I was linked to an essay on this somewhere -- though of course I can't find it now -- that talked about how the kinds of "small talk" that are common in public space translate to "give me information that will allow me to track you down." (ETA: found by [personal profile] livrelibre! It's [personal profile] brigid's post men and women in public spaces.)

6. Mythbusters! I have been watching it! Last week's episode -- Fireball Stun Gun -- was massively meta, because Mythbusters spoilers )

7. Doctor Who! I am incredibly behind on it. *facepalm* I just now watched The Hungry Earth, and I should probably watch the rest of the two-parter, but meh. I think I will watch some Avatar instead.
eruthros: Farscape: John and Harvey in bunny suits (FS - John and Harvey in bunny suits)
So I was thinking about the [community profile] kink_bingo mini-challenge for this month as I was editing the kink wiki and putting in examples. And then I thought, wow, actually, I can think of a whole bunch of characters who dressed up in fursuits orfeather-suits! I should make an iconset of them to demonstrate how prevalent it is! So then I did.

There are 32 35 icons (thanks [personal profile] sabinetzin!) of people in fur/feathersuits under the cut: Mythbusters, Life on Mars, Boston Legal, Buffy, Middleman, Gravitation, and Farscape.

Sample:
001
002
003

furry iconset )

Aaaaand then I thought, while I'm uploading icons, I'll put up some Misc Iconage that I've done recently. This set includes Mytbusters kink icons, Doctor Who, Star Trek TOS, Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, Rachel Maddow, Yellow Submarine, Hustle, White Coollar, Lord of the Rings (!), X-Files, Nichelle Nichols and Zoe Saldana, some stock photos of photography and tomatoes, and an educational comic from the 1950s.

I don't even know what all of these were for! )

1. Here is a thing I wish blogs would agree on: what "previous" and "next" mean. On some blogs, previous entries points to older posts; on some, it points to more recent posts. Having to hover over links to figure out where they go makes me cranky.

2. Dear the internet, I am looking for a film called A Private Function. (1985, starring Maggie Smith and Michael Palin, in case there are several by that name.) It is not available on Netflix, or from my library, or from any of the usual places, and costs like $60 used on amazon or ebay. Does anybody have access to a copy? Your own or a library's or a better video store? ETA: I think I've tracked it down at a library, thanks!

3. I have this problem where I have physical therapists, but they're all about "getting better," not about what would make daily routines easier. So I have some things that I need, but I don't know where to shop for them -- are there good assistive devices shops that you like? Where should I buy a folding cane? If I want to get those foam things that go over the handles of knives so I don't have to grip so tightly, what are they even called and where can I buy them? That sort of thing. And instead my PTs say things like "oh, well, but maybe you won't need it for long..." and "why don't we wait and see if you get better first..." and "well, but you can work around it for now, right?" I find this very frustrating. Especially since "getting better" is so far the work of years. And thus I ask you, the internet, instead.

4. I am not going to talk a lot about episode 8x03 of Mythbusters, except to say: JAAAAAAAAMIE!!!! Omg he was adorable. And arrogant, which somehow makes him even more adorable, I don't even know. And Adam loves it. Also, I <3 Grant, because he is awesome. And Kari -- I'm so glad she's back.
eruthros: Mythbusters screenshot of Jamie blushing red and laughing (Mythbusters - Jamie having an emotion)
1. Is there anything that I could do in a dw entry to show/hide some text once the cut has already been clicked?

I'm thinking about transcripts in particular, here; sometimes I have entries with several (long!) videos embedded, and the transcripts would make a looooooong scroll bar blockquote. If I could hide the transcripts with a click-here-to-view, that would be pretty cool.

2. New Mythbusters! Because we seem to be doing spoiler cuts now, there's some stuff about 8x02 Dive to Survive under this cut )

3. So, this isn't exactly related to the most recent episode of the Mythbusters, but [personal profile] thingswithwings and I were talking about how Adam and Jamie just have this drive to educate people about hands-on science. And I was like "oh man, now I'm thinking about an AU where they're high school teachers." And [personal profile] thingswithwings was all, "wow, Jamie would be the worst high school teacher ever, except for Adam."

I still kind of want it anyway. Jamie and Adam teach physics! Adam nearly blows up the labs! Jamie teaches kids about acceleration using bows and arrows! They meet grouchily in the teacher's lounge and snipe at each other about teaching methods! Jamie eats nutritious homemade food paste! Adam eats slurpees! That part is perhaps not an AU!

4. I get to go to vividcon this year! I am so excited about this you guys.

See, I usually have to go be in the Middle of Nowhere for most of the summer, but there was a chance that this year I would only have to go for a couple weeks, so I registered for Vividcon in the spirit of HOPE. A few weeks ago it was still "well, we'll maybe want you for two weeks at the beginning of August?" and I was distraught. But then! "We don't need you this year, only come if you really want to!" \o/ \o/ \o/

PLUS I got really sick of going every year -- Middle of Nowhere, no internet, and I came back sicker every time I went. So I'm very grateful to have the break for that reason, too; maybe it'll seem more fun next year, after this time off. And maybe by then I'll have a diagnosis, and will be able to figure out why I always seem to come back sick, so that I can do something about it. (Stress? Diet? Chemical exposure? Sleeping problems? Who knows.)

So: Vividcon road trip! I get to go to vividcon! And meet fangirls! For maybe the only time in the next ten years, because this is likely to be my only summer off! *does dance of vividcon*

ETA: edited to strike the girls out of fangirls, because someone drew my attention to it as a casually and thoughtlessly gendered noun. I'm really sorry, guys! I look forward to meeting a bunch of new fans I've never met before, regardless of their gender identity.
