Take Clothes Off was pretty huge. I think the controversy around it helped get it more buzz than it might otherwise have, because as you say, BDSM AU does have a more limited audience. I know for sure that was the story that got me, telesilla, and helens78 in the fandom.
I had never seen the show, but had read a couple fics before that, one of which I hated (astolat's something I can't remember the title of off hand...I found out afterwards that nothing of hers agrees with me) and one of which was okay, but not memorable. Take Clothes Off was the first one that made me want to watch the show and get into the fandom.
I still haven't read a lot of the big stories in SGA or in any of my fandoms. I always mean to, becuase I want to know what people are talking about, but they don't always appeal much and tend to be long, which means they go on my to-read list forever and never actually get read.
