That's totally licit according to me! One of the things the original NPR list didn't really include was the shared-world or complicated not-a-trilogy kind of series, which was a big part of my formative speculative fiction reading - the Star Wars extended universe and Bordertown and Diane Duane's TOS novels and Discworld and X-Men and etc.
