Yeah, I mean, I think that's part of why it irritated me so much - because they're clearly trying, and they're making an effort, and they obviously want to write interesting autistic characters, and so it makes me sad and angry to see all the ways in which it's still got a crappy ableist foundation and still so ... idk, condescending?
(The supervillain doesn't seem to be autistic, actually - I had to google for it, because they never explain it in the article, but the episode itself said she has apraxia affecting her mouth and thus can't speak but can translate any language. But can't communicate with anyone until Gary figures out the sound and movement-based language she's invented. If I understand the google results, anyway; they were kind of confusing.)
