OMG you guys I think my laptop is broken.

It's all -- the screen is all white with sometimes some blue streaky stuff, and sometimes there's this sort of vague hint of the page behind it, and it only looks readable when it is in exactly the right position. And this is a good kind of broken, right, because I didn't lose data, and it's still usable if I don't move it at all, but ... but ... *hugs laptop*

I don't know what happened! I set it down last night and it was fine! It was! And. WAH.

It's still under a protection plan, but to use the protection plan I have to find the information, get it to Rochester, and I have to give it up for untold weeks and I can't do that because I need it! And god only knows they might declare it something that's my fault, and I can't afford that. And. And.

Calm down. Get thee to someone else's desktop monitor and plug it in to your laptop, hit the LCD/CRT key (usually in the top row of keys on a laptop keyboard) and see if the display from your laptop is correct on the desktop monitor. This will let you know if the screen is dead. And if the screen is dead, it's dead. And it's expensive and you may as well get a new, cheapie laptop. :( :(

Sounds like a problem with the display/maybe the hinge, and hopefully that's something that's easy and quick to fix.

You might try looking to see if there's a place locally that will rent you a laptop while yours is being repaired. Or if you can borrow one somewhere- ask around. A lot of people have older laptops that still work or just don't use them so much that giving it up for a week or two is a problem. (I've gotten two free laptops before I finally sprang for my new one- and if either of them were still working, I'd ship one to you.)

Or if you can manage temporarily with a desktop monitor (doubtful I know- I have the impression you take the computer with you a lot), but if you could, try your local freecycle list for a monitor. There are always tons of people giving old ones away (rather than paying for disposal). Or your university IT dept- the place I'm taking classes at just gave away a bunch of them.

Screens on laptops go out a lot more frequently than regular screens -- you probably didn't do anything to it. One alternative is to plug a regular monitor into the back, which is what I did when mine broke. Depending on where you bought it, you can also have them send you a replacement and install it yourself if you're up to it (I only know Dell does this, don't know about Apple or Gateway or etc).

Good thing it's still under a protection plan!
