You are all fired. Why didn't anybody tell me about this vid to Evening on the Ground?
I have declared this my new favorite John vid. I watched it five times yesterday and twice already this morning and it is still awesome. Oh. My. God.
I don't want to set it up with my reading of it, but if you watch it and go "wtf is
eruthros smoking" then you should come back here and click on this cut tag.
Because, guys, here is how I read that vid. I read that vid as the inside of John's head. We spiral in around him at the beginning, and spiral down into an incredibly tight John's-brain POV. The song is from John's POV, but not John talking to other people. This is John talking to himself, as in the cuts that position him talking to young-naive-John who is about to come through the gate and will end up aged a million years. This is "Way to go, John! Trust a wraith!"> John who think he's never trying hard enough; John who is always blamable; John who knows they were made to fuck each other; John who sees the Atlantis as this Edenic space that he has either a) ruined or b) can't protect properly -- take a look at the fucking guitar break oh my god, and the way Atlantis-as-Eden begins to be colored by the b+w violence and John failing to protect his friends.
And it also sets up John as the garden, with that line "I will wear it in the empty hollow part of my garden." The line that makes me go "!!! oh, JOHN!" Seriously. Especially after the million years line. Because. The SALUTE and the UNIFORM and the PHOTO and the RECORDING and, oh, John.
And then, after we say: John never tries enough, John never works enough, John has failed, John knows he has failed, but he'll never stop trying, we spiral back up out of his head and build John back up again in all his artificiality and performativity: big guns, flyboy, loner, charmer.
In short: new favorite John vid. *hearts* Seriously, guys.

Date: 2007-11-08 02:05 pm (UTC)Well, what can I say. Thank you! I'm absolutely thrilled that you enjoyed the vid so much, and even more so that you understood what I was trying to say about Shep. It really is a great pleasure to know that the message came through. To me, Shep's layer of guilt and emotion is much more interesting than his slutty ways (although that's mighty interesting as well, lol) so the shot of him in the camera in the "garden" line is the purest image of Shep that we've ever seen on screen. It's the real Shep, and I'm so glad you picked up on it.
Again, thank you!

Date: 2007-11-09 09:39 pm (UTC)I'm still just "!!!" about this vid -- I think I've watched it twenty times at least! I love the syncopated rhythm and the cuts and the inside of John's head. :)
Thanks so much for sharing it!
