Ah-ha! Now we know that Spike's evil: after five seasons, he finally wears leather pants. Black leather pants are one of the main markers of villainy on BtVS; when the whole Spike and Angel and Dru thing happened in season two, you always knew who was in charge. Angel. With his big, bad leather pants.
Also: song-driven trances? Or something? Half being pestered into submission, half hypnotized or possessed or something? Gotta say, though, humming while digging the grave was a nice touch.
I know many people are big fans of Angel, but now that the two series seem to be running on the same storyline, I'd just like to note my hope for the Biblical plague theme continuing on Angel -- no more Connor and my point about the whole wussiness everyone has about Angel's "dichotomous" "soul/no-soul" behavior would probably be validated, especially in light of Spike's "I chose this" on BtVS this week.
And maybe the vampire who actually chose his soul could be the vamp-with-a-soul of prophecy. I mean, the Big Bads are really trying to fuck with his mind, not just take him out. So there's gotta be something there. (A plot reason, not just a "the fans love Spike" reason.) I just get so pissed off about the insto-forgiveness of Angel, and the Angel is The Most Wonderful Vamp Every, For He Has a Souuuuuullllllll. I mean, this despite the obvious fact that souled personality plays a part in vamp personality, and despite the fact that the Judge could kill a vamp in season 2 for being too human. And could nearly kill Spike and Dru for having human emotion. Just sayin'.
Plus, this whole thing really conflicts with the problem of Anya. Anya chose vengeancey goodness, so Buffy decides she must die (because, apparently, that whole power center thing in season two was just a whacky delusion or something). Anya's been soul-free the whole time, though, according to Joss and co. So she clearly was being humanish while soulless. I mean.
All I can say is: Oz had some damn good manacles for this very situation. Chain Spike in the bathtub again. He'd probably thank you. But no. He's sometimes sane, so that would be Mean.
