A story about fannish brains

So, thingswithwings and I were getting groceries this morning when we walked past an Irish pub doing its St. Patrick's Day celebration. We got about five paces past the sandwich board advertising their menu and suddenly stopped, turned and looked at each other, and said "did you just see that?"

So I went back and took a picture.

Sounds good to me.

Also: I have sometimes nearly made this error myself? But I am a) fannish and b) not writing menus.

maybe . . . maybe the sign-writer knows a real person called Sheppard, and got confused? Maybe the cook at the bar is called Sheppard! And he hates making Shepherd's pie because then everyone always makes jokes.

SEGUE TO:

an AU where John is a cook at an Irish pub, but hates it because everyone always asks him to make his "famous Sheppard's pie," and they put it on the menu like that, and eventually he refuses to cook it anymore, and all the customers are sad. Except for Rodney, who comes in occasionally for a beer and some stew, and who tells John that really his haggis is much better anyhow. la la la, makeouts.

this is also a universe with no Carson! And also where they serve haggis in Irish pubs, because it's America, or possibly Canada, and celtic is celtic. I DON'T KNOW OKAY

Seriously, "Mmmm, it's a tasty repression crust wrapped around a filling of latent homosexuality!" is possibly the most hilarious description of both Sheppard, and Shepherd's pie I've heard all... life? (Although where I'm from there's no crust in Shepherd's pie, which would be like a OOC/fanon Sheppard, without the repression?... now I'm thinking way too much about both the person and the food.)

(I must say, I usually see "Bangers and Mash" rather than "Bangers and Smashed"; is this a legitimate variant of which I was previously unaware, or should I start mocking now?)

Oh, man, I didn't even notice that! I don't think Bangers and Smashed< is a legitimate variant, which probably just means that the sign-writer is unfamiliar with ... food. And menus.
