huh? Dean Martin where what now?

They just played Dean Martin's "Sway" on CSI. "Sway" is one of my favorite gone-through-kitsch-and-come-out-the-other-side songs ever. I mean, I don't like Dean Martin much at all, but that song's fabulous.

And it seems incredibly random to hear it on CSI. I mean, it's not exactly a famous song, really. But it does have incredibly hilarious lyrics, although really it's his emphasis that really makes the song.

I liked how they used that song to great effect in "Dark City". Man, what a good scene. Jennifer Connelly, a 20's-style dress and flat-pressed curls, a microphone. Good stuff.

I also like the image of gone-through-kitsch-and-come-out-the-other-side. That is perfect.

I realized the other day that I no longer have a clear intuition of what is kitschy and what is cool, because for me, the one has melded fairly inextricably with the other.

This can be a problem when attempting to determine if a particular souvenir for someone is funny or just over the top.

On the subject of gone-through-kitsch-and-come-out-the-other-side, in which category a fair quantity of my comedic musical taste fits, because lord is "Indian Love Call" a hilarious song, my parents own this book. Because friends of theirs contributed. It's a kick and a half.

And I understand the problem with the kitsch<-->cool continuum. Especially with regards to souvenirs. You're all "okay, I find this pressed-and-dyed sand sculpture of a flamingo wearing a cowboy hat absolutely hilarious -- but is it really?"

And I've never seen Dark City. Silly me.

And here, it's even more so, because I have to take into account the fact that I have a fairly larger amount of background information to find Japanese kitsch funny that some of my friends don't have. On the other hand, there are also things here that I don't find as funny because I do know the story behind them, that somebody out of the loop would fall over laughing about. So, yeah. Buying silly kitschy presents for people is made more complicated by being in rural Japan. ;)

Unfortunately, I saw Dark City before I understood how much of a Goddess Jennifer Connely was. I remember enjoying it, because it was delightfully weird, so I think I should rent it.
