So, um. How I ended up making a hundred plus A:TLA icons.
I liked the show a lot, and when I watch shows in genres that are relatively unfamiliar to me, I try to pay attention to the structures of the genre so that I can figure out what the show is trying to do. Anyway, one of the ways I do this, sometimes, is through screencaps and iconing, because screencaps and iconing involve figuring out how a show frames the characters and the scenes, how it conveys emotion, how it plays with space and color and things.
And I liked Avatar, and starting with the second season -- I'd watched the first mostly while doing other things -- I started screencapping it to try to get a sense of the genre, and then I started iconing it, and then I didn't stop. And then today I was having a shitty day, and I thought, fuck it, I will just upload all those icons that I made and then enjoy looking at a table filled with all the awesome characters from Avatar. Because they are awesome. Hang on, I'm gonna go be reminded of how awesome they are some more.

Date: 2010-07-02 05:27 am (UTC)I really like what you said about screencapping to figure out framing/emotions/what the show is trying to convey. That's a great way to approach the visual language of the show.

Date: 2010-07-02 08:01 pm (UTC)I have genres/mediums I'm really good at (Canadian and USAmerican scifi) and genres/mediums that I'm just not (sitcoms, cartoons, comics, manga). So I find it helpful to try to parse out the visual language of those shows -- it helps me appreciate them! And makes the next cartoon easier. :)
