So I have convinced [livejournal.com profile] graycastle that even if Emancipation and Broca Divide made her want to claw her eyes out, some of Stargate SG-1's first season is cool. And I was going to tell her what episodes to not watch, and which to definitely watch, and which to sort of go "whatever" about, but then I thought: hey! we're fandom! Let's do a poll instead. Let's have discussion! And consensus! And things!

So! A poll behind the cut. It's got a list of episodes, and I want y'all to tell me if they suck, or if they're awesome.

[Poll #933359]

So I did the poll this way, but I thought about doing it with radio buttons instead, a question per episode. Like, "Broca Divide: Suck, Awesome, Don't Care," "Enigma: Suck, Awesome, Don't Care." Which method works better? The problem this way is that you might say to yourself, "well, nothing can suck as much as the episode where..." and then not mark some only slightly less sucktastic things. But the problem the other way is lots of radio buttons, and no within-season comparison of that sort. Hmmm.

It might be sad of me, but anything with good Janet got an automatic pass into "must watch" no matter how sucky the rest of the ep was.

Yes. Even Hathor. And Broca Divide. Though, Gods, they're awful.

I think the best version of Broca Divide would be a cut containing only Janet's scenes, and possibly the scene when Teal'c knocks out the guards and takes the blood sample (since, y'know, Teal'c just always rules). Because you're not wrong. You're so very much not wrong.

I'd say we could do the same with Hathor, but I've heard that Suanne Braun *rocks*, and so I like the actress. Plus her later two-parter is much better.

Okay, see, I love Hathor. I do. I admit it. It just has so much high-quality cranky Sam!

And isn't that just great? I'm of two minds, because I will admit to the awfulness of Hathor while rewatching it over and over just for the Janet. And watching her friendship with Sam develop? Love it.

Gosh. What's difficult about this is that even a lot of the super sucky episodes have moments where I thought, wow, there's this show's potential, right there.

I mean, granted, in the case of The Broca Divide that moment was basically just "Daniel gets his ass handed to him! Such a long and heartwarming tradition! Yayz!"

But yeah. Like others have said, Sam and Janet in Hathor were fabulous. Cold Lazarus was a really interesting idea and an interesting exploration of character. Emancipation...

...okay, Emancipation has nothing going for it at all. Yikes.

But also, for the first season of a show it had a surprising number episodes that were just really very, very good and hardly cringe-inducing at all.

That said, the episodes that have convinced a few people in my neck of the woods to watch the show were Children of the Gods, There But For the Grace of God, and Within the Serpent's Grasp. Dunno if they're the best, but they did the trick.
