Nominations resulted in about a thousand different works, which should all be listed in this long list poll. The top 250(ish) works from this list will turn into another short list poll in just over a week.

The poll is split into ten questions, each with 99 or 100 works; you can choose up to ten works in each poll question. (Splitting the list into separate questions is not entirely fair - what if all your favorite things end up in the same one? - but there are too many things for a single question, and this isn't exactly a scientific polling system already, so.)

This isn't intended to make an objective list of the "best" works - your top works could mean your favorites, the things that influenced you the most, the things you think are the most interesting, the things you think have the coolest speculative fiction elements, the works you think are best, or however else you'd like to define your top works.

If you'd like to comment explaining why you love a work, or why people might want to check it out, or why you like parts of a work but don't like other parts or find them problematic, or link to people talking about a work, please do! Just don't comment solely to talk about why a work (or its fans) suck.

Some notes on the poll: Sometimes both a book series and a single book from that series are nominated, or both a manga and the anime based on it, or a book and the film based on it, or other sorts of part-whole problems. You can vote for any or all of the formats, depending on which parts you like best - so you could vote for both The Left Hand of Darkness and The Hainish Cycle if they're both in your top ten, or for just The Left Hand of Darkness if the book is in your top ten but the series as a whole doesn't make it (or vice versa). If multiple parts of the same thing make it to the short list, I will probably combine them there - so here it's Akira (movie) and Akira (manga), and it would be Akira (movie, manga) if it made it to the short list.

Works are (generally) alphabetized by their original title, though I'm certain to have mixed this up sometimes. If you see typos or works attributed to the wrong author or anything like that, please comment so I can fix it in the spreadsheet.

You can change your vote as many times as you want for any reason. DW accounts and OpenID accounts from other sites (google, lj, ij, yahoo, etc) can vote in the poll.

The poll will stay open for one week - it'll close next Thursday at noon(ish) EST.

ETA: There are a couple of things that are on the list twice because of typos (they weren't caught by the formula that removed duplicates or by me on my first pass) - so far I see The Left Hand of Darkness and the Legend of the Galactic Heroes tv/ova. I'll add the votes for both lines up manually. *facepalm*

I am rewatching the Voyager pilot, and I have an important question for you all.



Seriously, he is practically shouting "top me! top me! somebody top me! look at how bratty I am!" Harry Kim: "... you know, it's not polite to just dive right into bratty sub without negotiating first." Janeway: "okay, I will give you an order, no problem." Chakotay: "how about some dirty talk? Also, I both owe you and own you." The Doctor: "I am also an authority figure, btw."

Also: I missed a lot of these guys. Janeway is awesome (and has not yet learned to put up her bun with 100 pins), Tuvok is marvelously deadpan-snarky, B'Elanna is so much fun, Tuvok and Neelix are a perfect comedy duo, Harry Kim is always getting kidnapped unless it's Paris's turn, Chakotay is great (and listen, his responses to Paris's hipster racism are brilliant), and Chakotay and Janeway respect each other.

1. misdirected email:

Good Afternoon [name], Thank you for registering for Friday’s Anonymous Sexual Addictions workshop.

Hey, facilitator dude, how about checking the email addresses before you send them? OR here's a thought: don't put anyone's name in your email! Then if it gets misdirected, nobody will know who was supposed to get it! And nobody will have been inadvertently outed! Just a thought.

Anyway, I can't decide if that was the worst (in the sense of most embarrassing or potentially harmful) misdirected email I've ever received, so I have made a poll:



2. joy: someone linked to this photo on tumblr, and it made me go all happy and awww. Because it is adorable!



That's Criminal Minds' Matthew Gray Gubler (Spencer Reid) on the left, and Shemar Moore (Derek Morgan) on the right. I have no idea where or when it was taken -- because, you know, tumblr -- so I sadly can't go and look for other pictures that might also include Kirsten Vangsness grinning. Criminal Minds turned into a different (worse) show in its last few seasons, but listen, Morgan still has my HEART. Okay, he and Garcia are sharing it. Anyway: just look at those grins, awwwwww.

3. photo-spread misogyny: Apparently Vogue did a fashion editorial spread on a Spider-Man theme. It is like, here are the films (and a lot of the comics) in a nutshell: Mary Jane is menaced by various villains with phallic bits to their costumes while wearing designer dresses and looking beautiful and unconscious/threatened/withdrawn. It's all right, guys, Peter Parker will save her!

4. tv: Lately I have been watching The Sarah Jane Adventures? I started at the beginning after I watched the one with ( casting spoilers! ), which was awesome and made me go \o/. And mostly it is a great mood-improver and full of happiness. They save the world with hugs and talking about their feelings and hand-holding! Rani and Maria and Luke and Clyde are adorable! Sarah Jane is awesome and has issues and backstory! They are a FAMILY. That saves the world and talks about aliens and emotions and love. If only most of the villains weren't evil lady-types, and if only the good guys didn't do that awful Smallville-esque targeted amnesia shit, I would have basically my ideal show.

5. Avatar: The Last Airbender: You might've seen this already, but just in case, did you guys see such_heights's post in white_lotus about an Avatar: The Last Airbender gift exchange? inkstone suggested the exchange + the lunar new year posting dates, and a bunch of people said they were interested, so it looks like it will happen! Fanfic, fanart, fanvids, etc all accepted. So if you have preferences for style/rules/etc, plz comment at that post; we're going to try to get rules up in a couple of days so that we can do signups before the end of November. \o/ ATLA exchange!

Best John/Rodney fusion EVER (today): PC/MAC. With John as Mac and Rodney as PC. NO REALLY. THINK ABOUT IT.

So I was having one of those conversations you have with fannish friends. You know. thingswithwings was telling me a story idea, and she said, god, what am I even doing, somebody's gonna stage an intervention any day now. And I, of course, pointed out that this was Stargate: Atlantis, and that you probably couldn't get an intervention for anything less than "the story in which Rodney and John sit in the office all day without talking to each other and just do paperwork," and perhaps not even then.

So, guys, what does it take to get an intervention in SGA? How far do you have to go?

Like, imagine your fannish friend who's been with you for the last three fandoms. You even bailed out of the X-Files at the same time! It has been so wonderful and lovely. But now she's gone a little bit off the rails in this wild and crazy SGA fandom.
