eruthros: Martha Jones smiling! (DW - Martha Jones is awesome)
1. I posted that high-protein cookie recipe that I mentioned a while ago over at [community profile] omnomnom! Also, I might've had some of those cookies for breakfast.

2. An interview meme from [personal profile] chagrined! Questions and answers are under this cut )

3. I actually kind of feel like I'm posting all the time right now, because I'm writing up [community profile] kink_bingo related stuff: resources, posting template, accessability, kink wiki stuff about kinks X and Y and Z. But then I don't post it! Because it has to wait until round two is closed! So I keep being a little confused about what I've posted and where. *facepalm*

4. I'm sort of doing three weeks for dreamwidth all the time, since I'm not crossposting, but I thought this related meme was interesting: What kind of topics/entries would you like to see me posting about? Any particular questions you've always wanted to ask me but have resisted because the answer would be a huge essay? Ever want to wind me up and watch me go on a particular topic? Anything you've heard me say "I should write that entry about _________ I've been meaning to write" and have been patiently waiting for? (from [personal profile] telesilla)
eruthros: Delenn building the crystal machine in season 1 of B5, captioned "foreshadowing" (B5 - Delenn incredible foreshadowing)
1. I hurt two fingers doing PT this morning -- the nominally-strong fingers I use to provide resistance for my isometric strengthening exercises. Yes, seriously.

2. I can't for the life of me find Torchwood promo pictures from seasons one and two, pre-Children of Earth. My google-fu has failed, hard. Where the hell are they? Help plz fandom!

3. I am looking forward to yuletide lots and lots, but I can't figure out what I want to ask for! Last year I had this huge giant list of fandoms that I wished were yuletide fandoms (sometimes just because I wished they could go in the vid), and it was hard to narrow it down further, and it is only worse this year, as I have now realized a) that Pogo isn't a yuletide fandom and b) that I totally ship Pogo Possom and Porky Pine. Porky takes Pogo a flower every Christmas morning! He's only pretending to be a cynic! My heart is touched.

Also I want there to be more Bruce/Johnny Dead Zone fic, so there's that. And perhaps I want Steerswoman series Bel-fic, in which she is awesome and amazing. And perhaps I will ask again for Better Than Chocolate transfic (Judy/Frances!), though I am always concerned about whether it would be done well.

Other things that are not yuletide fandoms but should be )

What do you guys want for yuletide? I ask because I'm curious, though it will inevitably lead to more things to add to my list of possibilities this year.

4. I maaaaaybe have spent a little too much time looking at the list of yuletide fandoms in the last, oh, year or so.

I found a new fandom when I was watching yuletide stuff. Well, I found a lot of new fandoms, but this one is important and I must share it with you.

Below, you will find a song from the movie Sholay. The song features Jai and Veeru, two thieves who love each other and run around stealing things for fun. The song is just -- so perfect, it cheers me up when I am sad. I can watch it over and over and over.

lyrics below the cut )

Jai and Veeru love each other! They ride through the countryside together! They are best friends forever! THEY ARE NOT TWO! I love them so much.

I may have *cough* clipped the whole scene to high-quality avi because it makes me so happy, so if you'd also like to have something to cheer you up when you're down, drop me a line at eruthros at livejournal dot com.

PS: the movie has a sad ending. If you're bad at sad endings, and thinking of watching the movie, let me know and I'll spoil you.

PPS: the only thing that made me sad about putting Sholay in the vid was that The Motorcycle Diaries isn't a yuletide fandom, because Sholay and the Motorcycle Diaries would have looked so pretty together.

I'm going to give the context at the end of the post; wait for it.

[livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings and I were watching different tv for the yuletide vid. I watched Jeremiah because I'm a B5 fan and thus pretty good at figuring out tropes in jms source, but I was having trouble finding anything we could use -- I sent a lot of hopeful email about plot developments that surely, any day now, would lead to hugging. And then! Success! About halfway through, I sent her this email:

Also, I have attached a touching scene, from when Jeremiah is captured by one of the remnants of the US government, who are like "we will take back this country from anarchy by violence! and killing people with the virus as a scare tactic!" And Devon knows how the virus works, so the evil President and General torture Jeremiah so's Devon will give in, and then Devon is like "I can't hold out! I've lost everything else!" and Jeremiah is all "we can save the world just by saying no." Also he is topless. Then they cuddle.

Here's a little clip from that scene. Watch it first.

watched it? click here, unless you're planning to watch Jeremiah later, in which case this is a huge spoiler )

Throughout December, I kept joking with [personal profile] thingswithwings that one of the most amusing parts of finally revealing the yuletide vid will be my ability to retroactively tag half my posts from the last six months as "vidding yuletide." We tried not to post about it, unless it was potentially something we could legitimately be watching anyway, but even so a bunch slipped through. SO! Here are a couple of posts that benefit greatly from context:

Critique of a critique of a BBC film. The BBC film in question is the Rupert Everett Sherlock Holmes, which I discovered in October and is my favoritest Holmes ever; the reason I saw the hilarious there-was-no-sex-in-Victorian-England critique is that I was watching a documentary on Holmes and Watson's relationship, hoping it would be a shortcut to a better clip. (At that point, I'd watched more than half of the Jeremy Brett Holmes, and was starting to despair. As if they were never in the same frame except in the dark!)

Comment on Jeremiah. I was watching Jeremiah hoping for Jeremiah/Kurdy, and I got no love! All I wanted was the two of them in the same frame leaning in, maybe hugging -- we had room in the hugging section. But no!

Henry Jones gave birth to Indy? I was not, in fact, watching the Indiana Jones specials just for funsies. No. We were tracking down a single shot of Indy-with-whip -- we wanted him whipping someone, but the camera always cuts away in the movies, so I ended up watching all the specials hoping for something without the camera jump, when he was practicing or something. (Tip for future vidders: yes, but only in a street with 1970s cars.) Then we just used the shot of him pulling his whip anyway, because it fit and actually worked quite well.

Accidental seaquest slash vid. One of our techniques, with a fandom we didn't know, or hadn't seen in a long time, was to check out youtube vids to remind ourselves of the cinematography and characters. This dates to the period when we were talking seriously about including Lucas/Darwin sleeping next to each other in the "baby baby baby" section, before we realized that it was nuts. Anyway, accidental Bridger/Lucas slash, which we almost vidded instead, but then it wasn't a yuletide pairing.

John and Rodney as PC/Mac. I was watching all the PC/Mac commercials on youtube, and thusly, I began to compare them to John and Rodney.

Oddly, many of my descriptions of sources to [personal profile] thingswithwings eventually turned into "and, actually, it would be a really interesting SGA fusion."

Awesome daily show segments. I was watching the Daily Show back archives "for reasons that don't need explaining at this juncture" -- then, because it was for a super-sekrit vidding project; and now, because y'all know what said vidding project is. I love Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert kinda a lot, so I was determined to find absolutely the best clip ever.

Remember the super-sekrit massive vidding project that [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings and I have been working on for more than eight months?

Well, it is super sekrit no longer! We now reveal:

One-Night Fandoms: a tribute to yuletide by eruthros and thingswithwings. You can watch it and read more about it on the main post, linked above.

Brief details: It's not a vid for the yuletide challenge, it's a vid of the yuletide challenge. 191 sources, all of them yuletide fandoms.

I still can't believe we did this. We spent eight months on it, combing the yuletide archive, finding source, watching entire television shows in a single week. We looked at more than 230 sources, many of which we'd never even heard of before we began the project. And we fell in love with yuletide over and over again in the process.

This appears in a critique of a BBC period film set in England circa 1900. Ready? Okay!
"I thought it was completely and utterly absurd. It was so out of its time. For example, all the knowledge about sadists -- sexual sadism and, and, psychopathy. Bearing in mind, Freud had only written The Interpretation of Dreams, I think it was published in 1899."
*laughs hysterically* Oh, man, talk about a non sequitor! APPARENTLY, sadism didn't exist until Freud invented psychoanalysis -- you know, it wasn't named, in, like, 1820 after some guy. No! It took Freud to invent the term and tell people all about it!

And, oh man, as if Psychopathia Sexualis hadn't nicely laid all of that out fifteen years prior? And as if folks hadn't bought it to read it as porn?

I love the way people think about Victorian England sometimes, guys.

Things that are awesome:

1) Episode 1x04 of Jeremiah, in which Luke Perry plays Jeremiah and JASON PRIESTLY plays an evil warlord who captures Jeremiah and Kurdy and wants to convert them. Thus, Jason Priestly and Luke Perry have intense conversations at each other while wearing flak jackets. As I said to [livejournal.com profile] thingswithwings, it's like Beverly Hills Post-Apocalyptico over here. (I don't much like Jeremiah so far, actually, because I hate daddy issues, but that was hilarious. I'm conflicted about the show, because I like the concept, and I like some of the characters, but the letters to daddy? Geez.)

Side note: Today's episode of Jeremiah features a really scruffy Ladon Radim. Oh Vancouver!

2) Revisiting these parts of past seasons of SGA. [livejournal.com profile] m_shell's joy as she goes through the seasons is reminding me of how much I enjoy the John Sheppard Is Really Gay show.

3) Zombie gingerbread men cookie cutters. Srsly.
eruthros: Delenn from Babylon 5 with a startled expression and the text "omg!" (B5 - Delenn OMG)
I was watching some of the making of Indiana Jones specials just yesterday. See, I finally saw Kingdom of the Crystal Skull the other day, so I'd be able to understand references to it. (These are the perils of teaching archaeology, guys.) And it was so incredibly awful that then I decided to go remind myself of better Indiana Joneses.

I was watching the Last Crusade special, and in the first minute of the special Steven Spielberg shares this amazing line with us:
I wanted to flesh out Indy's relationship with his father. And I said, here's a time we can really do a really good character study of who gave birth to this guy.
And I realized, omg, this explains so much about Hollywood! They don't understand the birds and the bees; they've seen so much television where people only have daddy issues that they believe in some sort of male parthenogenesis. In order to be as masculine as possible, male heroes are born of fathers who they can't live up to, never mothers who might soften their aggression. All the best cowboys do have daddy issues; they can never have mommy issues. WHO KNEW.

And this is how we get Jack on Lost, and Jeremiah writing letters to his dead father, and basically everybody on Heroes (or so I'm told), and everybody else on tv whose entire adult life revolves around their father's judgment.

1) I need the election to happen now, because of how I spend my days reading blogs and violently skyrocketing from joy and sniffles to despair and anger to complete bafflement and hilarity.

I mean, seriously, firefox's new most-visited feature informs me that, after from igoogle (my home page) and you guys, all of my most commonly visited pages are either political blogs or stuff for the super sekrit project.

2) I now have early-morning physical therapy appointments twice a week. So I'm getting up when it's still dark, going up to the office to be hit with sticks, and I have to pay for it. This hardly seems fair.

3) I cut myself on my bialetti coffee maker this morning. One of those nice deep gouges in the knuckle. How is that even possible?
