The deadline is officially in less than 48 hours at this point. I'm not quite at the point where I'm properly worried yet, but that may be coming by this time tomorrow depending on how much fic writing I'm able to get done between phone calls at work tomorrow.

Still, I try to save the proper panic for the minus 12 hours and counting point, so I still have plenty of time before that arrives. It's fine. Compared to some previous years, I'm doing significantly better already.

Rec-cember Day 15: Firefly

A quick one, because tonight I'm shattered. In the unlikely event someone isn't familiar with the show or the movie, Fanlore has a good rundown.

My main ship back then was Mal/River (now that I'm older I'm slightly squicked by the age difference though River is so much more powerful that Mal that this redresses the balance a little), so my recs reflect this. Also, Firefly seems to be the little black dress of crossovers, as it goes well with any fandom. I remember reading loads of very fun crossovers, unfortunately I had only a handful saved in my bookmarks.

No Power In the 'Verse by [archiveofourown.org profile] vialethe. 24K words. Mal/River. Having no choice but to feel, River cherishes all the more deeply the ability to act. If only she knew what action to take." A believable and gorgeously written take on this unlikely pairing. Very good River voice, which must be a bitch to get right.

I Fall by [ao3.mal profile] Kass/River. River knows what she wants. Probably the first story that made me fall for this pairing. It's adorable how persistent River has to be and how flustered Mal is.

Whisky and Wet by [archiveofourown.org profile] musesfool Mal/River. There's a difference between what a man wants and what he knows is right. Exquisite yearning, lovely character voices.

Good Luck Charms by [archiveofourown.org profile] Nary. Pre-series Wash/Zoe. Lovely backstory for one of the best married couples in TV.

And Then It Went all F*ing Stargate by **indyhat. Firefly/Generation Kill. Gen. Spot-on character voices. Hilarious.

The Pitt

never waste a Friday night by [archiveofourown.org profile] morphosynctactic. Trinity/Whitaker. Don't hit the back button! I know this have siblings vibes. Yet this works. It's tremendously in character. And hot. And sweet. And hilarious. You would think that sleeping with Trinity Santos (who isn't actually that into him) would rip Dennis' self-esteem to shreds. But it turns out that when she texts him "i thought your dick was going to be kind of weird but it’s pretty solid” and "your fingerblasting is adequate" he knows that's the truth and nothing but the truth.

Today's temperatures: Started below 20, "feels like" in the single digits. But not to worry, within a week we should be in the 50s!

And they just said that, with no commentary, like it's not absolutely bizarre to go from 19F - 56F within a single week in December.

And it's not just the high temperatures that are bizarre, the low ones are too. I can't speak to the decades before 1990, I guess, but NYC weather used to be temperate - we got more snow, but that's because the winter temperatures were in the snow range - close to the freezing point, not so warm it melted, not so cold that it just didn't happen.

The assignments that you received when signing up, and pinch hits #1-96, are due at 9pm UTC 17 December (see countdown). It's nearly here. For most people, it'll be Wednesday. Please check the links!

When you post your story, please make sure...

  • It is at least 1,000 of your own original words and marked as complete. You can update and edit your story after the deadline, but any version you upload must be a complete story that could be read in that state, with a beginning, middle, and end, and no placeholder text.

  • It is not posted as a draft. If your work is still in Draft status on AO3 at the deadline, it will not count as fulfilling the assignment, as no one but you can access it. To check if your work is a draft, go to your assignments. If you see a work title and the 'Fulfill' button, your work is a draft and you have not yet fulfilled the assignment. You can also check your drafts at the 'Drafts' sidebar link from your main AO3 page. Fully-posted works can be viewed from your Stats page and from Works in Collections. You can also reach out to mods to check!

  • It features *all* requested characters or follows exceptions specified in the additional tags ("My gift must feature..."). Please see this post for a reminder of how the additional tags work. Regarding Worldbuilding: if your recipient has not selected characters beyond that tag, whether to flesh out the world using original characters or canon characters is up to you. If they have vetoed specific characters, obey those DNWs.

  • It does not contain Do Not Wants. Please check that your story does not contain any of the Do Not Wants (DNWs) listed in your recipient's Optional Details. If you have any doubt about the meaning of your recipient’s DNWs, please contact the mods.

  • Its title and other metadata are not placeholders. Please don't call your work Placeholder Title or Yuletide 2025 Work - upload a title that reflects the unique work. You don't need to write a summary or append detailed tags, but please make sure that if you do include that information, the information is real.

Other important notes
  • Stay anonymous! Yuletide is a secret exchange. Don't give away publicly what you're writing or who you're writing it for. Don't add your work to an existing series on AO3, or a personal works collection. Don't identify yourself in your author's notes by, for example, linking to your tumblr or dreamwidth.

The Cinematheque is running a full David Lynch retrospective in December: all ten of his feature films, plus a collection of shorts and the entirety of the new Twin Peaks season. I'm not certain whether I like Lynch's work but it surely is memorable.

Of those: I quite want to see Blue Velvet (seen once, basically no memory of it), Lost Highway (seen at least twice, fuzzy memories), Mulholland Drive (never seen; sounds like a more coherent Lost Highway), and The Elephant Man (never seen; supposedly Very Very Good). I have some interest in Wild At Heart (Lynch directing Nicolas Cage?) and Inland Empire (more Lynchian surrealism; might be more than I want all at once). I have pretty much no interest in Dune (ugh), Fire Walk With Me (ugh, though for different reasons; also, seen it), Eraserhead (from what I've heard I do not need that look into David Lynch's id), and The Straight Story (meh). I do not have it in me to watch eighteen hours of Twin Peaks in four days, though if I did I'd probably also watch Fire Walk With Me. Also no interest in the short films (see above re Eraserhead), and besides those are already over and done.

I'm so glad the Cinematheque exists. It's not as historic as the Lyric in Blacksburg or as fancy as the AFI Silver in DC, but it's comfortable, and it shows a decent amount of stuff I'm interested in. Vancouver honestly has a pretty impressive non-mainstream film scene: the Cinematheque, the more upscale VIFF Theatre, and the more... pop-culture-y, I guess, Rio. Plus the Cineplex in International Village mall that shows random foreign films.

Potential post-xmas schedule below, so I have it written down and can stop saying "wait what am i doing again?"

[F]irst wild beaver spotted in Norfolk in 500 years and Wild beavers may have spread further than we realise:

It is not clear whether the Pensthorpe beaver, whose sex and age is unknown, was illegally released into the reserve by activists using a practice known as beaver bombing. It is possible it wandered of its own accord into the Wensum – an aquifer-fed chalk river whose name is derived from the Old English adjective for “wandering”.
“It could be a naturally dispersing wild beaver,” said Emily Bowen, a spokesperson for the Beaver Trust, a charity that aims to restore beavers to regenerate landscapes. She said that there were established wild populations in eight areas in England at the moment.
Wild beavers have also been spotted in Kent, Hampshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Hereford, she said. Norfolk has some captive beavers but none have been reported missing.

Maybe it's a sinister beaver underground conspiracy....

And if we are talking aquatic mammals, see also otters: otters’ revival in Britain. Still rare only 20 years ago, the charismatic animals are in almost every UK river and a conservation success story.

White storks to be introduced to, believe it or not, Dagenham.

A rather different story: voyaging owls: Two burrowing owls stowed away on a cruise ship out of Miami, and are now living the high life at a Spanish resort before returning to the US next month. We think they may have been in flight from being a threatened species in Florida....

Yesterday was travel day. I had an entirely uneventful journey to Heathrow and an equally uneventful flight to Helsinki. I was due to have just under two hours between flights but when I checked the monitors after border control I realised it was going to be more—pretty much everything still due to depart that evening was delayed. The estimate for my flight was 40 minutes initially, which got updated with another 25 minutes later on, presumably when it became clear when the aircraft was arriving from its previous journey. That was more or less what happened and we eventually landed close to an hour later than scheduled.

It was always going to be a short night and I was very tired when my alarm went off this morning. But getting up, having breakfast and unpacking helped get me going- And I was determined to go for a short walk at lunchtime to get some fresh air and hopefully clear my head a little, and that helped too to last through the working day.

In the evening, mum and I met my aunt to go to a Christmas concert with a string quartet and a tenor, and it was wonderful. But very tired now.

Dyslexia

My female main character just told someone she's dyslexic. News to me, but that's how my characters roll <3 and it may perhaps help ground something else about her as a secondary consequence of childhood struggles with reading.

I've read a lot but it's all professional overviews and such, not enough from people who actually are. Right now I'm looking for small things I can tuck in which will suggest dyslexia to attentive, aware readers without spelling it out. She is 32 and those who are closest to her will be well used to working with her needs.

A few childhood memories can be tucked in as well.

Another question for those with dyslexia, if someone suggests reading novels out loud to her, would that be likely to work or might there still be difficulties with following everything? I understand there's a range of differences but I'd like to have her be fairly representative that way if I do include that sort of scene. Or maybe he suggests novels and she asks for short stories?

I'd like to do better than just 'trouble reading' and consequently struggled at school.

Her possibly relevant characteristics (things mentioned on the overview sites) which can't change - she is very adept physically and has excellent spatial awareness, reaction times, navigation skills and such. No dyspraxia or ADHD. If there's any executive dysfunction, it needs to be limited and compensated for well. She needs to be quick-witted, adaptable and confident she can hold her own in conversation with people who are trying to get the upper hand too.

But so far there's only one scene where she reads or writes anything and that can be altered. It's almost like she's been trying to tell me this all along.

I hope this makes sense. If you feel the need to tell me how wrong I am, please be gentle with your vehemence.

TIA for any help.

Yes, I am cutting it close. I blame getting COVID Halloween week, and having to rest like a potato. Which I am still doing, but I have advanced to the stage of literate potato. I hope. Because this thing is due in, what, fifty-some hours?

Anyhow, I came here to post that I have reached the milestone in writing the current draft where I just reread a section and said out loud, "OK, so there are actually a few bits in here that aren't completely shitful." Like, it's a known milestone. So that's encouraging.

Onward.

(Yes, that's why nothing new is in the shop this week. I have been on a schedule of sleep, write, sleep, write, with meds and basic necessities in there as needed. Not enough oomph left to photograph new work and still write and edit. Potato has limited spoonage here. But Potato is too proud to default on Yuletide. Please point people to go shop in the Etsy shop, though. Potato is fretting about this being a rough December for so many artists. Oh! Remind me to tell you about Boxing Day, which is going to be completely bonkers in a new way.)

Pick a date below and give me a topic, and I'll ramble on. I'm good at talking. It can be anything from fandom-related (specific characters, actors, storylines, episodes, which Disney Marvel shows are my faves and why, why the world should give the Tudors a rest and make a Stuarts era show or several instead, which 18th century ladies need their own series, etc.) to life-related to favorite tea brands to whatever you want.

They will probably be brief, or not, depending on the subject. Also, I reserve the right to decline prompts that I don't feel equipped to meet.

Topics: you can get an idea from my tags/from the stuff I usually ramble about/from things you maybe wish I talked about more but don't.
